Based on my reading of the text World Without Fish by: Mark Kurlansky what I found interesting was that Charles Darwin saw nature as a cruel system. In the text it states, “He did not see nature as particularly kind, but as a cruel system in which species attempted to kill and dominate other species in order to secure the survival of their own kind.” I found this interesting because I thought nature wasn’t a cruel system but when he put it that way it did seem like nature is a cruel system.

Based on my reading of pages 12 through 17 what I found surprising was how many people were against Darwin’s thinking. On page 16 the text says “Darwin’s ideas were extremely controversial in 1859.Some people were upset that he did not see nature as kind.Others thought his vision of how humans evolved conflicted with what was written in the Bible.”I found this surprising because when I read this part of the text it didn’t affect me in any way.

I found all the different types of names that organize the animal kingdom confusing. Before reading pages xii-xvii I only knew about Homo sapiens, mammals, birds, amphibians. Reptiles, and fish. All the other names provided a deeper understanding of the animal kingdom. I got confused for remembering which name meant what. I also was wondering why the animal kingdom was organized the way it is. I found interesting how important fish is to us. Before thinking about what the world would be like without fish, I didn’t notice that fish and many other animals hold up the food chain. If any part of the food chain breaks, the world will have a down fall. I found surprising how all the other Homo genera became extinct beside humans.

Based on the order of the Animal Kingdom Mammals (Order=Primates, Family= Hominidae, Genus= homo, Species=Homo Sapiens, and The Human. This is surprising that we are with the animal specie because of the hominidae.

I found it very interesting why Darwin feels this way about the our actions towards animals. It states on page 17 “It is important to understand that there are not two worlds: the world of humans and a separate world of plants and animals” this proves that Darwin has a strong opinion about people and how we are connected to the rest of the world. That is what i found very interesting in pages 12-17 about Darwin and his opinions.

I found it very interesting that humans are more affected by the animals that are biologically closer to us than with other species. I found this super interesting because it is true! For instance, we have more affection towards pandas then we do for a fly. If we see a panda being hurt, we immediately feel bad for it and want to save it. But if we see a fly being mistreated or swatted away, we could care less. That is what I found very interesting about “A World Without Fish”

On page 13 when th3 text states “Ultimately, a vegetarian is a person who rejects killing loving things for his own kingdom- animals-but accepts killing things from other kingdoms - plants.” This can show that by not killing animals you are killing plants which eventually can kill animals anyway.
