Change what? You may ask. It is time to come together and unite to change this so-called government. The Articles of Confederation are slowly distroying this nation. We eliminated the king of Great Britain for our freedom, but when we lost the king we lost all organization and order. For example, the Congress has lost control over trade and money. They leave it up to the states to make their own money and own taxes. This makes it difficult to trade with other states because almost every state has a different currency. This also means that states can make as much money as they want. This is a problem because when money increases, taxes increase making it harder to buy goods that have been taxed. In addition to Congress having no control over trade, Congress has no control over our laws. What is the point of making laws if you are not going to require states to obey them? Many Americans, both loyalist and patriots, are protesting and rioting for a better government. But a few people will not make a difference. It is up to everyone to come together and create a new form of government. All I wanted was peace, but ever since we broke our ties with Britain things have gotten out of hand. Since the Articles of Confederation have been created there has been nothing but chaos. It's almost like no one knows what organization and unification looks like. For starters, " When Congress [passes] laws, [they have] no power to ... make sure it [is being] obeyed. Meaning that whenever Congress makes laws, the states don't have to follow them. How will there be order in this new nation if the laws can't be enforced? It seems as if the states are too independent. I never know what states I can and can't bring my slaves to without it being considered illegal. Also Congress is failing to support trade. There are several currencies in diferent states. It is so difficult to trade my tobacco in other states to get Virginian money. It doesn't help that Congress is allowing the states to create so much money that the price of slaves is extremly high. Who knows if we will ever pay back our loans from other nations. Maybe taxes will be even higher. I was risking my life for freedom and independence, but was it worth it? We finally got King George out of our hair but lately we've been facing even bigger problems. My wife and I were planning on moving up to Boston to raise our cash crops upstate and because we do not support slavery. But now that each state has its own laws, the amount of land I need to make a profit is too expensive in Boston. I can't buy a smaller plot of land because not only will I get a smaller trade income; but I also will lose my right to vote. That's another issue. Our right to vote is dependent on how much land is required in each state. What I mean is that depending on which state you live in, you must have a big plot of land and you must be a white male if you wish to vote. I have to choose if I want my land and the right to vote or move where I can live in better conditions and set all of my slaves free. This needs to end now. Like Ben Franklin said, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we will all hang separately." The states need to come together if we are going to survive.
