This was known as the Kapu system. Ruling chiefs controlled land and how it was distributed. When chiefs gave them land they thought they were the land's guardians and they were to take care of the land and live off of it. The people never owned the land though. The ruling chiefs could redistribute land at any time they also controlled martial rights which means they controlled the wealth that the people had. The people lived off the land that's why it showed wealth and they would farm and fish to get food farm materials were also considered wealth because of this.

A year after that, in April 1820, people from New England came to the Hawaiian Islands and began the process of switching to Christianity. This forced them to suppress many Hawaiian practices like the Kapu system.
