         <description><![CDATA[<p>The French founded Libreville in 1849 as a settlement for freed slaves. In 1849 the French organized a small settlement of freed slaves, which was called Libreville, meaning “free town” in French. The area has been inhabited by the Mpongwe people since before the French acquired the land in 1839. Men wear them loose-fitting with matching pants, women wear them with a double wrapped pagnes (a colorful strip of African cloth).</p>]]></description>
