What is Netiquette?

Netiquette, or network etiquette, consists of a set of rules that one should follow to display positive online behavior. Following these sets of rules is important because as a student, professional, and everyday individual, you want to portray yourself in a respectful and appropriate manner since you are being judged by fellow online users. Especially as a student and professional, potential job opportunities can access online content from you so it is very important to always put your best impression forward.

Netiquette #1 (Remember the Human)

"Remembering the human" rule when using the internet is the online version of the golden rule: do unto others as you'd have others do unto you. Since all a person can really see when using the internet is a screen, people tend to forget that there is someone else on the other side looking and reading. When someone forgets about the other users or simply does not care, that is when issues can arise.
I chose this rule because of the simplicity surrounding it. It is easy to get carried away and say and/or do things on the internet and not think twice about it. However, if you stop yourself and ask, "Would I want someone else to do this to me?", it prevents you from doing something that can hurt a fellow user.
The golden rule is one of the most important aspects of life to teach students because it serves as a bases for treating others. This netiquette rule is just the online version of that so teaching students to remember that their fellow humans on the internet share the same feelings and emotions as them can encourage positive online behavior.

Netiquette #2 (Adhere to the Same Standards of Behavior Online That You Follow In Real Life)

Adhering to the same behavioral standards online and in real life is simply about being a behaving citizen. Negative behavior online can seem less likely to be caught than in real life because of how big the internet is. Doing illegal things on the internet is just as bad as doing illegal things in real life.
I chose this rule because it's about choosing the right thing to do on the internet just like choosing the right thing to do in your everyday life. Many people's logic is only about not getting caught but it really should be about choosing right from wrong and this applies to internet use as well.
Teaching this rule to students is another way of teaching perception of someone online. If someone chooses to say something or do something that would help another person, then they most likely do the same thing in the real world so it promotes the notion of helping others.

Netiquette #3 (Make Yourself Look Good Online)

In order to make yourself look good online, you need to possess certain qualities. These qualities include knowing what you are talking about, proper grammar and spelling, and being pleasant and polite. Possessing these qualities and even brushing up on them if you lack in one demonstrates that you are a competent human being.
I chose this rule because just like you want to make yourself look good in real life, whether it is how you dress and/or how you behave, you want to put your best foot forward in the cyber world. Especially when it comes to looking for a job, you want to make yourself look as professional as possible.
Teaching this to students is important because giving others a perception of yourself that is different from who you really are is how people get labeled "fake" or "imposter". Once you have that kind of label, it is hard for others to look past it. Ensuring your authenticity at all times is how positive online relationships and opportunities happen.

Netiquette #4 (Respect Other People's Privacy)

Respecting other people's privacy is a rule that should be followed everyday but unfortunately is not. People, especially in modern society, are very curious about other people's business. It is morally wrong to go through other's business because going back to the golden rule, you wouldn't like it if someone did it to you so why do it to them?
I chose this rule because respecting others is how you get respect as well, or at least that is how it should be. Having personal information out in the open is very intrusive and many people are not comfortable with that. Simply respecting others' privacy is how one gains respect themselves.
Teaching this to students is important because everyone is entitled to their own privacy and it is okay to say no to talking about certain things or doing something online. When students respect others' privacy, it creates a positive environment for sharing information because the respect is there.

Teaching students that there is another human on the other side of the screen is crucial. To get this message across as effectively as possible, I would show the students examples of negative online interactions and ask them how they would feel if they were on the receiving end of what was said. Going off from their responses, I would make a poster board with their responses written on them as a reminder that they do not want to feel like that so why make someone else feel like that?

It is easy to say "I don't care what others think of me." However, the online perception you give off of yourself is important. In order to make sure my students are aware of that, I would show them examples of things said online that maybe don't make sense or are negative. I would then ask them if they think this makes those individuals look smart. I would follow up with that by asking if they want to be looked at as a smart individual who can someone others go to for help. Hopefully, they would say yes and then I would say how what you say and how you say it can either make you look intelligent or not so intelligent. To conclude, I would strongly advise them to choose being an intelligent online user because it will benefit them in any situation.
