The Acts placed duties on items such as glass, lead, paint, tea, and paper. The money was used for paying justices and supporting the civil governments, and it allowed general search warrants for any reason at all. Also, the New York Assembly was suspended for opposing the Quartering Act and smugglers were tried in court even without juries.

The Reason for the Townshend Acts

The reasons were that the Townshend wanted the old Navigation Acts strictly enforced, and Parliament, the king and England wanted America to pay because Britain had cut of France from the colonies.
