A photo that has been taken in its original form- no adjustments to lighting, exposure, clarity, or alterations is what feels "true" to me. The second part of your question has me reconsidering how I feel about it being true. A photo can be staged, yet in its original form, without manipulation (editing and retouching) and not be true because it's staged (if that makes sense). So, I don't know actually.

It feels true if I can relate to and understand the image. For example, I know what fog, horses, and open plains look like, so I feel that the photograph here is true. Is that the same as it being true? No, as I know nothing about this photograph except what has been selected by someone to put in front of me for viewing!

A true photo to me is one that hasn’t had a lot of pre-planning done or altering afterward. It’s just a moment grabbed by the photographer without editorial thought ahead of time.

This doesn’t mean the photo must lack compositional aspects or must have technical errors in it. It’s just a photo that freezes a moment in time without trying to convince the viewer of something.

What makes a photograph feel true to me is when it's unedited, with no changes in lighting or exposure, and something that isn't planned out. Something that is taken in the moment, like being caught off guard, is what makes a photograph feel true to me.

A photograph feels “true” to me when it captures a moment that just seems real and relatable. Like you can sense the real mood or connection happening. "Truth” in a photo is more about how it makes you feel than whether it perfectly reflects reality.

what makes a photograph feel "true" is raw emotion that you can see/feel through a photo. If emotion is portrayed correctly though a photo you feel that is is true no matter if it is or not. In comparison to a phot that is of something "true" that you know is true, emotion can make any photo feel this way if done correctly. In my opinion.
