Masculinity in different cultures, usually depend on strength and power. A lot of cultures have masculinity defined by your strength or ability as a person. Some cultures define masculinity by using extreme violence and terror like the Mafia in Sicily and Chicago, and in present day ISIS. Other cultures have unique ways of looking at masculinity. For example, in present day Papa New Guinea the males are separated from their mothers at age seven and have to undergo secret initiations like nose bleeds and performing oral sex on men.

The Gender Gap

The site is measuring gender equality on a global scale. Some of the aspects that go about to making the ranking are, over health and survival, political empowerment, education, economics, and treatment in the workforce. As a nation we are ranked as number 45. One common insight of gender that I saw within the project was the clear gender binary in the information. Additionally, a trend that followed with most of the rankings was clear discrepancies between men and woman. An example of this an equality can be seen in the fact that, women are equal to or greater than men in Education enrollment rates for primary, secondary, and tertiary education. However, men outnumber women in two of the three professions listed on the site, showing a discrepancy between education and opportunity to apply said education.

Gavin Grimm's Story Summary

Gavin is a 17 year old transgender boy who fought in supreme court to have rights to use the male bathroom in his school, but because classmates feel uncomfortable using the bathroom with Gavin, which resulted him using a unisex bathroom. This is social injustice because he has the gender identity of a male, and should have the right to use the male bathroom where he feels most comfortable. In our society, he is a boy because this identity makes him happy and he in out terms, he is a boy stuck in a girl's body.
