Name

When I was born my parents discussed what should be my name, they threw out different names but then my dad had the idea that I should be named after his mom and then my mom said , "well what about my mom's name"? They agreed that I should be named after both my grandmother's but then they argued over which name should be first. I didn't really like my name because it was not typical but as I got older and learned that my name has a meaning in Nahuatl language. It means the truth or the true one. The image I choose to represent my name is a character from an animation called Onyx Equinox that has my name.

This song reminds me of family party's where I was able to observe the people that I loved be joyful. So I learned to love this song over the years for multiple reasons and I've dedicated to my youngest cousins during their Quinceanera's because of the lyrics of the song. What the song translates to, "A tear, a feeling, that one start you see twinkling look closely at the world around you and you'll see all the great things life has to offer". There will be things that we want in life but material things aren't as precious as those one of a kind experiences that we'll have when you are being present and in the moment.

Una lágrima, un momento, pese a todo sentimiento

Una música muy bella, un perfume, una estrella

Mira bien alrededor y verás las cosas buenas

Que la vida es un amor, olvídate de tus penas

This is an amazing song but it also represents me and my culture identity. This song in particular speaks to my political awakening that I was went through. The lyrics below speak of a society that uses its most vulnerable citizens to fight violent wars for the rich who are heavily involved and creating the wars in the first place.

For brand new spanking deals marching forward,

hypocritic and hypnotic computers

You depend on our protection

Yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth

Enchiladas Estilo Michoacan

The food I choose is Enchiladas, often people imagine a rolled up tortilla in red sauce with a lot of melted cheese on it. However, that is not the Enchilada style I'm referring to because in my house we only make Enchiladas estilo Michoacan. This is part of my culture Identity because my mom's side of the family is from Michoacan and my great grandmother use to sell them outside of her house during dinner time for years. The difference is the way they are made. You dip your tortilla in semi hot oil, then into the red sauce, then back in to the hot oil then you add the filling you want ( graded cheese, meat, or veggies) and fold it in half. The other difference is also the pan that they're made on. It kind of looks like an upside down sombrero. Then when done cooking you top it off with shredded cabbage, graded cheese, tomato slices, and for those who like it jalapenos and picked carrots.

The second dish I choose was Pozole. It my favorite dish to have and very specifically I like red pozole. It also reminds me of my grandmother because when I was young we would only have it if we were at her house during the holidays. At first I thought only my grandma and mother made the best pozole whenever I had other people's pozole. I later realized that I thought it was the best because it brought up many nostalgic memories for me and it gave me comfort.

Part of my culture identity is my ancestry. My part of my family is from Michoacan Mexico. In the state we have indigenous roots from the Purepecha people. Historically, they have been one of the few areas that were able to resist the imperialism of the Mexika. This vase represents the beauty and craftsmanship of those pre-Columbian centuries that were untouched by colonization.

For many years my Grandma owned and lived in a house that is within the same neighborhood as Fremont. She eventually bought another larger house in another part of town but decided to rent out the smaller house to different family members. One day during a family gathering my family members started talking about that specific small house and how one time they saw a tall white man with overalls and straw hat pass by the window but when they went to go check outside there was no one outside and no footsteps on the dirt. It turns out that different generations of my family had been seeing the same "Ghost".

Quote

"Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they recognize your power — not because they don’t see it, but because they see it and they don’t want it to exist."

This quote was stated by one of my favorite Feminist writers. I fell in love with her work immediately because she was so direct and powerful with her words. She left an impact on me because she was constantly questioning the power dynamics that we all live under. She was the reason I became a feminist, which is a culture I am proud to be part of. She also helped me realize that there are different ways to push out those oppressive forces that affect us.

There was a few places in Los Angeles that acknowledge this sacred Indigenous tradition. When I use to actively participate in Aztec Dancing, October & November were a special time to hold ceremonies to remember those who had passed on but not in a way that made us sad. It gave me a sense of peace and joy that I was able to build Altares for the people I appreciate the most .
