2.Most students have High IQ
3.Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
4.Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.
5.These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction

Things I Learned about DYSLEXIA today...

1. October is DYSLEXIA Awareness Month
2. I learned of a program called Nessy, and I am intrigued and wish to learn more.
3. The term WORKING MEMORY. A working memory is limited.
4. A WORKING MEMORY for most can be 5 to 7 chunks of memory but for someone with DYSLEXIA it may be limited to 3.
5. I have seen the fact that 1 in 5 students are DYSLEXIC but I don't think it truley resonated inside of me what that really means... 1..2..3..4..FIFTH student, DYSLEXIC 6..7..8..9..TENTH student, DYSLEXIC 11..TWELTH student, DYSLEXIC 13..14..15..SIXTENTH student, DYSLEXIC 17..18..19..20..TWENTY-FIRST student DYSLEXIC potentially in each classroom .
6. Even though I have personally struggled with the difficulties of DYSLEXIA in my own diagnosis, my oldest and my youngest child's diagnosis. I countine to fall into the same pitfalls with thoughts of doubt and misleading thoughts of laziness or forgetfulness and disorganization towards myself and my children. I know first hand how it feels when a teacher or a parent says "lazy just pure laziness", "you are so lazy and it shows in your work" or "Did you even listen to what I said?" "What am I going to do with you? This is so disappointing.. I thought you could do better." The list could go on and on. Watching the videos made me more aware that sometimes we ALL (parents, students, teachers alike) need to reanalyzed how we help our students/children in the classroom and at home.
Thanks you Mrs. Neighbors

Trish Jones

1. October is Dyslexia Awareness month.
2. 1 in 5 have dyslexia.
3. Audio books help more with comprehension.
4. Dyslexia is caused by a phonological processing problem.
5. Brains of dyslexic students rely on the right hemisphere and frontal lobe which means when they read a word it takes longer to go through the brain because it is delayed in the frontal lobe. Great news is that this can be changed!!!!!

Tracy Cates
