For the white male, having a lighter toned slave indicated the owner had money, and a high status quo. White indentured Slaves began reproducing children with African Slaves.  
In some colonies when a white indentured slave had relations with a black slave it was seen as a crime, and if a child was born that child would be punished with a life sentence of slavery. 

White Masters also fornicated and reproduced with Slave women. There was no punishment for the White masters, but the child was considered a slave.
