In the book George Washington's Spy, seven friends- Matt, Q, Hooter, Tony, Lilly, Emma, and Katie go on a time travel adventure back to 1776, nine months before the Revolutionary War. Tony's grandpa warned him of the legend of Levy Lake. The legend states that there is an old row boat by Levy Lake and if you get too close to the boat you get lost in a trance and get beckoned into the boat. Then, the boat has you travel to any period in time. However, this isn't the boys and Katie's first time in the boat, the last time they got stuck in the middle of the Revolutionary war! As they travel back in time, they all get separated, and experience blood, dying, and the pox. Some even met the famous founding father Ben Franklin! Even though they all made it back alive last time, who knows if they'll make it back alive this time!

George Washington's Spy by Elvira Woodruff takes place in Boston, in 1776. In this time period, redcoats swarmed the city of Boston. It was during the time of the Revolutionary War. During this time, the pox was a deadly virus going around. King George took over Boston during this time, and any traitor who went against him would get their head chopped off. Then they would hang a string holding the head. The string would hang from a frame that said, "TRAITOR" on it.

https://www.nycgovparks.org/highlights/american-revolution-in-parks/

In this book, I got to understand more what it was like to live during this time period. It made me realize that their lives weren't so easy. If you weren't a loyalist, or loyal to King George, you had to try not to get caught, or else! It was hard to get around Boston with all the crowds of people gathered to witness heads getting chopped off. Gross!! Sometimes the biggest crowds were the red coats making sure no one went against King George. A redcoat was a soldier who works for King George, and there were a lot of them. It was also really hard to go somewhere when everyone was against you. During this time, people had to stay safe from the war and the pox. When someone had the pox, they had to get their blood sucked out by leeches to get the virus out of them. So their lives weren't as easy as we thought.

This picture describes a major event in the book. This is when they traveled back in time, when they are at Moses's "Thomas's" mill and Ben Franklin comes. During this part in the book, Ben Franklin complains that his feet are hurting him and he looks at Hooters bright puffy purple sneakers. Then they trade shoes, this takes place closer to the beginning of the book and Hooter has his boots for the rest of the book.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ethomsen/3494793177

This picture shows what a red coats uniform looked like. This has a lot of meaning to the book and characters. In the story, red coats were everywhere and they watched every one. They were almost like slaves to King George. Since there were so many red coats King George did not know all of them. Some of George Washington's spies would dress up as red coats to see what they were up to. In the book, Matt had to dress up as a red coat for a favor for George Washington.

https://www.liveauctioneers.com/price-result/american-revolutionary-war-british-red-coat-officer-s/

Around 1775 to 1883, the smallpox was going around Boston. If you contracted this virus you would get a large rash and a fever. Sometimes you would lose too much blood and they would have to put leeches on their rash and let them suck out the blood of the person. In the book, a little girl named Charity Hewston got the pox. The doctors put a rope in her mouth to help her from screaming from the pain because when the leeches sucked the blood out the pain was excruciating. Unfortunately, not everyone survived from the pox!

https://www.britannica.com/science/smallpox

This is a major theme in the book because, now you see how desperate they were to get home. In the book, all they wanted was to get home. This quote shows how they felt about not being able to call home.
