There is a lot of good work going on but we need to join this together and have a whole systems approach with all key stakeholders working together. This also needs buy in from Councils and local MP's. Building activity it into peoples day to day lives almost by stealth - with active transport, destination that encourage activity, events that almost as a bi product promote movement and participation. This has to be underpinned with an infrastructure and PR & marketing plans that makes moving normal. We also need to target those hard to reach groups such as BAME, disabled and lower SE groups.

This is not a simple question to answer! It depends a little about who we are referring to. For lower social economic groups money may be an issues, for those who want to cycle to work the infrastructure is an issue. There are issues about modern, clean, safe facilities that are easily accessible. There is also the issue of having a culture of playing sport, and participating in exercise and physical activity and it being normal. This is particularly important - feeling able to do this if you have not done it before or want to return to it after a long time away from it

We need to develop a County wide strategic plan with all stakeholders contributing to clear objectives and tactics to achieve this over the next 30 years. This requires a generational change. It need lots of communication and input from lots of different stakeholders. It should be bottom up and not tope down. It cant be done in 3-5 years.

As somebody who works, trying to find activities out of working hours that are not too late is difficult. Not everyone wants to run or cycle, but there isn't a truly comprehensive list of what activities are available, with place, time, cost etc. Too many things seem to be focussed on Northampton and not other parts of the county. I would like to swim more, but lane swimming in Daventry is restricted due to schools and after school lessons and only one swimming pool for the town.

A one size strategy does not fit all. Different age groups have different needs. Parents are probably busy ferrying kids to activities to do anything for themselves. Opportunities need to be available at different times. Give people a chance to try new activities - taster days at local locations, where external groups can put on displays and people can join in. It's as much about changing attitudes as anything. Show people you don't have to be young and trendy, you can exercise at any age and have fun.

Arguably, Covid also creates an opportunity in terms of addressing the physical de-conditioning that has been identified as a consequence of Covid-19 restrictions. The priorities identified via Population Health Management work with PCNs, and also via ICAN could also be useful means of getting NHS attention and potential funding support. NB: I understand that CCG / ICAN have secured involvement from national NHS Payments Team to look at how NHS funding could be used more flexibly in Northants in future.

Insight - Language / labels.

The language of making choices, being in control, staying well / strong / feeling lively, may all resonate better, but we should start from where people are at.

Specific groups – e.g. Pregnant woman – would like to attend a condition specific group for being active with other women.

As I look around town I see a lot of obesity. West Northants has done very little towards promoting active travel especially cycling and getting people exercising easily. There is very little encouragement to exercise and reduce obesity despite the fact that it is closely related to reducing death from Covid. There is Little clear information to show the health benefits despite exercise reducing cancer risk by third and significant improvement in mental health and well-being. We have lots of green spaces yet there is no coordinated place to go to find what is happening with regards to classes or groups using the green parks. A coordinated response and strategy is long overdue between Ramblers, Cyclists and Health services

BJ fog describes three key things. Motivation, small changes and prompts. Targeted strategy using prompts to make people aware of the simple things they could do. Getting up every hour and taking a stretch it’s a start. Doing two or three basic exercises such as a squat. Small changes grow. Exercise buddies. Clear easy signage and promotion of what’s already there and how to access. Clear signage of green routes. Get cafes involved. Get active travel developed as Leicestershire. Have competent passionate people engaged at West Northants applying and using funding from National Govt. work with current gym providers to grow the population exercising especially in green spaces. Reduce Council tax on gym providers that enable more people to use green spaces by promoting classes and community groups.
