Left untreated, diphtheria can lead to many complications. Breathing problems may occur due to a result of the membrane covering the nose and throat. The bacteria produces a toxin leading to possible heart damage by spreading through the blood stream or other tissues in the body, or possibly nerve damage due to the toxin infecting nerves controlling muscle movement and breathing. Severe untreated cases can easily lead to death or paralysis.
