Why do the Friar and the Summoner begin to argue? Why are they mad at each other?

The Summoner was upset with the Friar due to the fact that he was sharing the Summoner's story. He thought it was not the Friar's place to out him for the bad things he did, such a theft, being a liar, and deceiving people. Nothing good was said about him, and he wanted to get revenge on the Friar.

The Summoner had many women he controlled that he would use to meet with men. After they would report back to him with who they had met, the Summoner would go and rob them. He made his money by scheming, using other people, and by lying.

Overall, this essay discussed how the church is corrupt in the Friar's tale. The Friar has been infected with greed, and how he acts snobby and in unchristian ways. He does not act how most in the clergy would, and should. He acts as if he is above them, and that he is in a higher position. He has taken advantage of this by trying to show "divine influence" and essentially tell people that he is a higher power, compared to the others. It's not a surprise that he has issues with the other members, because he acts and talks like he is more important, and he is not.

Dishonesty for approval will show nothing.

Describing the Friar pretty spot on - this shows how he believes he is higher and more important than the others in the clergy, and wants the approval from the people. But in the end, he has conflict with the others he is surrounded with, and does some nasty things to get to this point. As a member of the church, you are expecting to go to a welcoming place, where you can feel accepted and give trust. But now, in this environment, we have a deceitful person who is exploiting those around him for money and power. He is selfish, and even went as far as to befriend a demon. He went against absolutely everything the faith was created upon. He used blackmail, prostitutes as spies, and even made up fake charges to get paid. The summoner saw his position as a way for him to make money and he had absolutely no care as to what it did to these people.
