         <title>Module 1 Part 1 2/3</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Today, in class we talked about the importance of manipulatives in the class. We talked about the how manipulatives can be used to make abstract ideas concrete. Manipulatives give students the confidence to understand and comprehend math. Some limitations that manipulatives is when teachers do not properly explain  the purpose and use of the manipulatives as tools not toys. Stigma surrounding manipulatives can cause students to not want to use them. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Module 1 Part 2  2/5</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In class we went over the first problem set which involved manipulatives. I learned that even though everyone had the same manipulatives to solve the problems everyone uses them in a different way. Some people prefer certain manipulative over other manipulatives. We also discussed the use of a number  line in the classroom. I was shocked to find out that only students in 2nd grade and above can understand the use and purpose of the number line. I honestly had not completely understood the purpose until watching the panopto video which explained that numberloine represent the distance between the numbers not just the concept of the numbers. I then connected number lines to rulers and now have a much better understanding of how to use both of these tools in my future classroom.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Today in class we discussed the abstract ideas of numbers. I never realized how complicated numbers are to someone who does not already know what they mean. We discussed strategies students use to learn what a number means and represents. Numbers are also represented by many different symbols and students need to understand that they are all the same thing. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In class we discussed the importance of teaching students math vocabulary starting at a young age. I never thought of the impact this has on the students. My teachers rarely taught me math vocabulary so now it is very hard to feel comfortable using the vocabulary. I have noticed I have struggled explaining ideas about math concepts through the years but have recently learned that easily describe these concepts. I am going to work on building my math vocabulary to share with my future students. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was surprised to learn about the different strategies that can used to support fact fluency. I have been using these strategies for years but never realized that they had names and logic behind them. I always assumed that everyone else just had these facts memorized and I was the odd one out having to use these to prove my fluency. I think it is important to share that these can be used and encourage their use in the classroom. </div>]]></description>

We learned how to write word problems to make students think differently using all these ideas and concepts to master these kinds of problems. Instead of thinking like students we have started looking at math like teachers.  also really enjoyed getting creative with writing the word problems. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Today in class and with the problem set we learn how to teach number placement which can be very confusing for new mathematicians. I had never thought of looking at number placement through anything but base 10 format, but now I know number placement can be done in any  format. We used the base 3 format in the problem set to do this and I learned a lot about how numbers are ordered and formed. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Today we talked about how a teachers mindset effects a students mindset and how to build a growth mindset in a student. I learned that the teachers feedback and what they give feedback on effects a students growth mindset. Students also develop a mindset off the teachers mindset towards a subject. If the teacher makes an effort and shows engagement and a positive mindset towards a subject, so will the students. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One take aways of class today is how to incorporate parents into the math classroom. The teacher should provide instructions for the parents so that they know what strategy is being used and how to help their kid use this strategy. The parents want to understand why their student is learning these strategies and it is up to the teacher to explain how these strategies will help students with math. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>We talked about the disparity between boys and girls in math. We discussed how they were formed and what we can do to make math more equal. A lot of it comes down to teaching young girls that they can do math and that they can love math not just boys. Girls need a strong influence from either there mom or another female figure in there life. This women needs to encourage and teach her that math is for everyone. </div>]]></description>

I only ever learned the standard algorithm so it was interesting to learn about different ways that division problems could be solved. When you multiply a number by ten,<br>just add a zero to the end of the number.&nbsp;<br>2. Use keywords to solve word problems.&nbsp;<br>3. You cannot take a bigger number<br>from a smaller number<br>4. Addition and multiplication make<br>numbers bigger.&nbsp;<br>5. Subtraction and division make<br>numbers smaller.<br>6. You always divide the larger number<br>by the smaller number.<br>7. Two negatives make a positive.&nbsp;<br>8.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Today we rapped up talking about fractions. We discussed different strategies to multiply and divide fractions. One take aways from this class is to use real world examples when teaching students how to multiply and divide fractions. This allows them to understand the answer and why it makes sense in this setting (for value because multiplying fractions does not make a bigger value like multiplying whole numbers). </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Today we began discussing decimals and how to introduce them in the classroom. One way is to connect it with the metric system and do an activity that combines both ideas. This will get students engaged and give them a visual representation of the metric system and decimals. Decimals can be confusing especially their value, but by comparing them fractions of 10, 100, and 1000 a student can better understand what they represent. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In class we discussed decimals. One thing I learned about decimals is that they can be regrouped just like whole numbers. If you have 11 tenths then that represents 1 and 1 tenths. By demonstrating this to students it can help them understand that decimals follow the same regrouping patterns as whole numbers and that they are based on a system of 10s. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In class we talked about how hard rulers are for students to use. Professor Marin said we should reminds students that rulers are just like a number line. The only challenging aspect is that fractions are learned way later then the ruler is introduced, but the ruler requires an understanding of how fractions are used and what they are. When rulers are introduced in 1st and 2nd grade I must make sure students understand how to properly use them and what challenges they may face with them. </div>]]></description>
