Since Nana was constantly telling Mariam what to do, not giving her much a choice or a voice, she kept a negative authority that stuck with Mariam after Nana killed herself.

Two Emotions

When in the presence of other people, like men, Nana is seen to be polite, but the moment she is alone with Mariam, Nana releases her anger. The difference between these two interactions demonstrates how Nana values men in society compared to women.
