Through his sister’s friend, Jackie Wilson, Barrett Strong was able to arrange a meeting with Berry Gordy. After they met and Barrett showed him some of his original songs, Berry Gordy signed him to Motown’s Tamla label in April 1959. Together, they wrote and recorded a few songs, including “Let’s Rock” and “Do The Very Best You Can,” but the tunes’ success was limited outside of Detroit.

Jimmy Ruffin caught the attention of Raynoma Gordy Singleton, Motown Executive when he was performing at Ebony Club in Muskegon, Michigan and she encouraged him to audition. During the process of audition he gained the support of the Motown stars, Mary Wells and Marv Johnson. Ruffin’s debut single, Don’t Feel Sorry for Me (1961), hinted at a promising future—one that was temporarily put on hold when he was drafted into the Army. Upon his return in 1964, he re-signed with Motown, only to find that the once-small label had transformed into a powerhouse of the music industry.

Jimmy Ruffin discovered What Becomes of the Brokenhearted, a ballad originally meant for the Spinners. Feeling a deep connection to the lyrics, he convinced the writers to let him record it. Released in 1966, it became a hit, reaching #7 on the US pop chart and breaking into the UK top 10. His follow-up, I’ve Passed This Way Before (1966), saw moderate success but led to his debut album, Jimmy Ruffin Sings the Top Ten.

Jimmy Ruffin found greater success in the UK than in the US, with Ruff’N Ready (1969) breaking the UK top 50 but barely charting in the US. He remained with Motown until 1980 before signing with a London-based label, staying in the UK until 1991. Jimmy Ruffin’s journey proves that hard work pays off.

Originally signed to Anna Records, they transitioned to Motown’s Soul label in 1964, performing both their own music and backing other artists. At a show in Battle Creek, Michigan, Junior Walker saw teens doing a dance called "the Shotgun," inspiring him to write Shotgun!—their most celebrated hit.

Jr. Walker & the All Stars rushed to Detroit to record Shotgun!, but when the hired singer didn’t show, Berry Gordy had Junior Walker step in. Hesitant at first, Walker belted out the vocals, creating an iconic opening that led the song to top the US R&B charts in 1965.

Born Charles Edwin Hatcher, Edwin Starr earned his stage name and a reputation for his James Brown-inspired style. After Motown absorbed his label, Ric-Tic, in 1968, he joined with an already impressive discography. His 1965 hit Agent Double-O Soul had cracked the US top 20, and he quickly built on that success with Soul Master (1968) and 25 Miles (1969). With his energetic performances and bold style, Starr captivated audiences.

Edwin Starr helped shape Motown’s sound in the new decade, with his biggest impact coming from the Vietnam War. War, written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, was first recorded by the Temptations with a softer tone. Starr’s explosive version, however, left no doubt about its message, making it one of the most iconic anti-war songs. It hit #1 on the US pop charts, #3 on R&B, and broke the international top 50, earning a Grammy nomination.

Edwin Starr’s final Motown project was the 1974 Hell Up in Harlem soundtrack before leaving the label in 1975. He moved to the UK, where his popularity grew, and remained there for the rest of his career. His legacy lives on with inductions into the Michigan Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues Halls of Fame, while War was honored in the Grammy Hall of Fame before his passing.

The Temptations formed in the early 1960s when the Distants merged with the Primes and quickly became known for their vocal versatility, tight harmonies, and showmanship. Originally featuring members Al Bryant, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, and Paul Williams, they later added David Ruffin, whose soulful tenor became a standout voice in the group. Their 1964 hit, The Way You Do the Things You Do, marked their breakthrough, and songs like My Girl (1965) and Ain’t Too Proud to Beg (1966) solidified their place in music history. Motown's Artist Development team, led by choreographer Cholly Atkins, helped the group perfect their signature moves, like the iconic Temptation Walk.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, under producer Norman Whitfield, the Temptations explored “psychedelic” soul with hits like Cloud Nine and I Can’t Get Next to You, pushing the boundaries of R&B. With Dennis Edwards replacing Ruffin, they continued to enjoy success throughout the 1970s. The Temptations' influence on R&B and soul music is undeniable, and in 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them #67 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
