It was easy to cross into the US during the 1890s-1920s because of the need for farm labor and were refugees sheltering from the Mexican Revolution.
My half of my mother's side came from Scotland to Ellis Island and because they were white, literate, and wealthy had no issues with settling into New York. The other half of my mother's side came from Cape Verde as Merchant Marines. My family in San Diego had established agricultural skills and easily found work in LA and East County. 

My family on the East Coast also had skills that enabled them to be quickly employed. Majority of my family were refugees from the Mexico Revolution. 

My family in Fall River Mass attended the Lizzie Borden trial and it was an epic few years with a lot of media attention. My entire East Coast family was hit very hard during the Spanish Flu. We lost a lot of family members.
