Microsoft Lens: This is a scanner app for phones, your phones might already do some of these things but this app can tie into your already existing 365 account. It uses your camera to scan documents or texts and can convert them into PDF or Word documents and can show them in immersive reader.

· Google Lens: This is an app that uses the device camera or photo gallery, to identify things around you like an unknown plant. It can also be used to translate words

· Google Translate: Can be used to translate typed or spoken words between selected languages, there is a conversation feature that will allow back and forth translation, and a camera feature that can either take pictures, or use augmented reality to translate words around you.

· Say Hi: A translation app focussed on conversation, it can convert speech to text and text to speech and will recognise different people speaking to translate accordingly. Works best in a 1:1 conversation but could be used to translate a single speaker like a teacher or lecturer.

The participation figures for our third annual Express Yourself North East Festival of Languages are in! We have engaged more children and young people than ever (21,532) with more schools involved (521) and 44 partners providing free activities. We are grateful to all our partners and all those who got involved to celebrate the diverse languages and cultures across the region and our connections with the world. We are currently preparing a programme for 2024.

Links with India for Newcastle schools have introduced from 2023. This year two new links have been established for a Newcastle primary school and middle school with partners in Gujarat on the north west coast of the Indian peninsula, bordering Rajastan. There are also new opportunities to establish links with Mumbai, the capital of the Indian state of Maharashta.

Key Stage 2 Scheme of Learning for Spanish

Revised Units completed February 2023

Our starting point for the planning and implementation of this scheme is the National Curriculum Languages Programme of Study (PoS) document. This sets out our statutory requirement to provide language learning for all pupils across Key Stage 2.

Each Unit has an overview document, setting out the learning outcomes, skills, grammar and structures, phonic focus, intercultural understanding, core language and assessment activities. Years 5 and 6 also include links to other curriculum areas. The Units are sequenced to enable progress in pupils’ language skills and linguistic knowledge. There are also detailed lesson plans. The language learning is based within the context of the culture of the Spanish-speaking World. The development of intercultural understanding is a key element of the Scheme.

British Council has announced a new programme to support UK schools to build lasting international partnerships with schools in Ukraine and explore reading as a tool to expand horizons, build confidence and boost mental wellbeing. Designed for learners aged 7-14 years in state primary and secondary schools, schools will work together on activities to encourage reading for pleasure, building an understanding of each other’s cultures through a common love for reading. They are offering full support and resources, including a fully-funded workshop in Poland, where partner teachers will meet in person to create a strong foundation for the partnership.

The UK has rejoined the Erasmus+ programme and funding will be available for international placements and partnerships for organisations working in education, training, youth and sport. This month, we hosted a visit from Caroline Remont from our twin city of Nancy’s and Nancy-Metz region’s team for international relations in education (DRAREIC). She visited schools. Headteachers and teachers also attended the Erasmus+ briefing session at Newcastle Civic Centre , to discuss international opportunities and the types of activities available for staff development, joint projects and visits – including with the region of Nancy Metz. We are delighted to share the Mother Tongue Other Tongue 2026 e-book, a digital anthology showcasing North East children and young people’s writing and creativity. 3,960 children and young people from 30 schools took part in this creative multilingual project as part of our Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages this year.
