The first world war is when people really started to not support the war, and anti-war groups were formed. This war was caused by selfish people, and people who wanted their countries to be better than the others. Some small attacks turned into an all out war between nations.

Diseases were common in the trenches, and many of the soldiers died from them. People also died and suffered because the weather was constantly changing, and it could get extremely cold in the trenches. There was also a thing called trench feet, and that is when the feet were hurting from all of the walking or from injuries.

Machine guns marked a turning point in wars. It allowed soldiers to kill more than one enemy in a short amount of time, and it also made it so that they did not have to reload after every single shot. Both sides of the trenches had them, so it was effective for everyone. It required six men to operate the machine, but it was very effective when it was used right.

Blood banks were made so that soldiers could get treated better when they were being helped by doctors. When different blood types were discovered, blood transfers were used more and they had many uses. Blood was kept on ice for 28 days, and sodium citrate was added so that it didn’t clot.

Zippers were invented so that soldiers could keep their belts and equipment secured better. They were originally called “hookless fasteners,” and they were extremely useful. Zippers became popular when aviators started to find uses for it, but buttons were also very popular for uniforms still.

A stalemate was when neither side won the battle. It basically happened when both trenches were not making any progress in the war. When they were fighting from trenches, sometimes no one was killed so they sat there for days and made little to no progress. They had to get creative in order to hurt the other trench.

The arrival of the U.S. soldiers changed the tide of the war completely. When they arrived, they helped end the stalemate and drive back the German soldiers. They weakened the Germans, and they ultimately ended the war at that point. Each American unit was partnered up with a French unit, and that made their army a lot stronger.

Aircrafts were used to spy over the enemy's trenches. There was no real way of knowing what the enemy was up to, so they used the planes as much as they could. They were also used to relay messages, and the messages were written on banners that were on the back of the plane. Some of the planes were even used to drop grenades and shoot.

When American soldiers returned from the war, their mental health wasn’t very good. They said that it took some time for them to get used to the fact that they had a future. Most of the soldiers did not want to be enlisted after the war ended, so they made their points to some commanding officers and demanded that they got paid and were sent home. Most of them also couldn’t find work, so they had a hard time getting back to a normal life.
