Earle starts by explaining the damage of deep sea oil drilling, then about the loss of biodiversity, coral reef bleaching, and rise in ocean temperature. It's upon further inspection that we begin to see the actual grave problems that we have. Underwater ecosystems are declining. Eventually, the ocean will reach a point of devastation where the amount of damage done will become irreversible. This will have major repercussions, all over the world, in differing ways. The consequences depend on who you are, where you are located, and what you value. Continuing down the path we are on now will result in the loss of crucial resources, marine life, and more.

Something which really highlights the extent of human dependency on the oceans from this article is a quote by marine-conservation biologist, Callum Roberts, "Human beings owe their life to the sea. Four in 10 humans rely on the ocean for food. Marine life produces 70% of our oxygen; 90% of global goods travel via shipping lanes. We turn to the sea for solace—ocean-based tourism in the U.S. alone is worth $124 billion a year—and medical advancement". The spots are strategically placed areas where all problematic activities are banned, allowing for healing of the aquatic environments. It's almost like the national parks we have for land, but for under the water. Earle has already started a "hope spot" off the shores of Australia. The project has shown excellent results, and she intends to start more "hope spots".
