During the French Revolution, each estate was treated very differently. The nobles were in the 2nd estate meaning they have a very high amount of authority. Not as must as the clergy did though. Then in the 3rd estate, was everyone else. They had no authority at all. Follow Theo the noble and Louis the farmer, throughout all of the French revolution. King Louis XIV of France from 1643 to 1715. He was killed and was not seen as a good king. Louis is important because he was the last king to rule France before the monarchy was established. People didn’t like him because he heavily taxed the people in the 3rd estate because he went on spending sprees. He greatly increased the national debt in France.

During the French Revolution the population was rapidly growing. France was also going through a very cold and rough winter. Louis, who was in the 3rd estate, was barely hanging on. He was working for a noble called Theo. Theo paid Louis very little. Just enough to pay for his home and for him to be fed just a little. Louis hates working for Theo but he knows that the only way for him to stay alive is to continue working for him. Louis is not able to pay for heat therefore he is constantly sick and cold. The cold is also preventing Louis from growing his crops. The cold freezes the ground and the crops die. When he can't grow crops he gets paid less and less. Louis is struggling a lot to get through life.

On May 5th 1789, King Louis XIV held a meeting called the Estates General. The meeting was called because the French Government was having financial problems. Each estate had one vote during the meeting. This had been unfair to people like Louis because the third estate had made up 97% of the population while they had the same value of votes as the first and second estate which was significantly smaller. People like Louis who had been a part of the large third estate had almost never won any debate because the first and second estate would always vote together since they were the two higher social classes. Louis and his fellow members of the third estate had proposed an idea that each delegate be given a single vote, this meant that the third estate had an opportunity to win a decision. The king had rejected this proposal and left the unfair voting system the way it was.

The First and Second Estates had a significantly lower population compared to the number of people in the Third Estate. As the Third Estate continuously demanded for equal voting and constitutional rights, the Higher Estates including Louis with the same amount of votes would over power and disagree in order to maintain a upper class supremacy.

The first and second estates would continuously outvote the third estate causing the thirds estate to have little say in government. The Tennis Court Oath is what laid the groundwork for the Declaration of Rights of Man and of Citizen, and the Storming of the Bastille. Louis was very angry. He was angry with everyone in the 1st and 2nd estates. He knew that he needed them to be alive but he knew that without them he'd be able to live. Louis knew that he needed to be stubborn and there needed to be a change in the way that they were living. That was when the 1st and 2nd estate gave in and created the Declaration of Rights of Man.

The Storming of the Bastille took place in Paris of July 14, 1789. Many shop owners, craftsmen, and other Third estate members had participated in the attack. Louis as well as other members of the lower class had been very upset about their involvement and say in government. They wanted to help make decisions and make life in France fair for everyone. King Louis had refused to give the third estate the same advantages as the first and second estates. The french commoners had taken over the Hotel des Invalides in order to acquire muskets for protection. The Bastille had contained the gunpowder they needed, when Louis and others demanded that Governor de Launay give away the gunpowder and surrender the Bastille he refused. Louis and his fellow commonsers were outraged and decided to storm the courthouse and eventually break into the main fortress. The soldiers of the Bastille were very scared and decided to fire into the crowd of commoners. The battle had ended with about 100 commoners killed...one of them being Louis's brother Lyam.

It had been early May of 1789, Theo and his fellow nobles had been walking the streets of Paris, when they saw a large group of 3rd estate members marching toward the beloved Bastille, the centre of Paris. The group of people had been armed with muskets. As Theo followed the group to the Bastille, he noticed that they had been demanding gun powder from the military leader of the Bastille, Governor de Launay. He refused several times and ordered the people to leave. Louis, watching the commoners get closer and closer to the main fortress, heard loud gun shots. The crowd of people had merged into one large violent clash. The people of the third estate had beheaded Governor de Launay, put his head on a spike, and paraded it around the city of Paris. Theo as well as other higher class French people had grown concerned for France and what it could turn into after this horrible event.

The Reign of Terror was a period of time in which there was a lot of state sanctioned violence. This caused many executions, and mass killings of people. This stopped other countries from coming into France, which kept the French Revolution going. Maxmilien Robespierre was a radical democrat who was a key figure in the revolution. He is the man who created the Reign of Terror. He created the committee of public safety which tried to show the difference between those who were for and those who were against the revolution. During the Revolution, Louis was very afraid of all of the mass killings that were going on. He wasn't completely sure what the reason for all of the violence was, but he knew that it wasn't good. He spent a good chunk of his life living in fear that he would get randomly selected for an execution or get caught up in the wrong crowd and end up dying.

Napoleon's determination to save France was incredibly admired by Louis and other Third Estate members. Napoleon increased and fixed the economy of France and gave members such as underclassmen and business owners who had been suffering after the war the opportunity to regain strength and equality socially which they had once lost after the revolution.

The people of France had been interested in Napoleons dedication when they first noticed his military leadership in his defeat of the British navy. Theo and others had known that they wanted a leader like this ruling their country. Napoleon was given command of the French army in Italy. He had noticed that the army was left unorganized and unsuccessful since the revolution had ended. His goal was to create a strong military and later fix the other problems that had been left for him. The First and Second estate members were proud of the successful growth that Napoleon had assisted France in.

In the end, a constitutional monarchy was created. The estates general became abolished and turned into the National Assembly. This prevented any biased opinions and caused most people to be treated "better." Theo continued on throughout his noble livelyhood and Louis become well paid and is now able to feed his family. They all lived happily ever after... well for now at least.
