We all have that one song that we always go back to. The song that we've listened to countless times and inevitably sang or whistled in the shower to the point that the song itself is associated with you, when your family overhears the lyrics, they know it's you singing it. We become investors and co owners in the music we love. This is why the relationship between performer and audience is so special, it is not simply give-and-take. Ratliff states that that is partially the reason we collect music because we" want to have a relationship with it, as we would with a friend."

Ratliff's first of the impact of co ownership and musical investing was in the work of Mariah Carey. The work she's produced in the early years of her career, was original, it was a sound unique to her developed by her, but under new management became more of like Ratliff stated, "a notion evened out by a group." or a productive collaboration. This became evident in the change her sound, the vocals exihibited in "Vision Of Love" became more and more scarce to the point that her range became some what limited compared to her ability.

The Beatles are my personal example of an artistic group that started out producing their own lyrics, but then started to take music they loved and mold it to fit their sound. For example, the song "Come Together" is their personalization of "You can't Catch With Me" featuring the same beat and lyrics. Only problem is that they forgot to give proper credit... oops!
