What is Science and How Does It Work?

Before NS 100 I only related science to elementary school or projects for my daughter's 3rd-grade class. During this module, I've learned that science is knowledge of any kind. It is the process of how we know things how and why things are the way they are. Science is an entire exercise in finding what is true (Neil DeGrasse Tyson). Moving forward I am excited to move on to each module. I am learning new things and that is exciting.

How The Scientific Method Relates to Scientific Inquiry and How Inquiry-based Learning Impacts Student Learning

Prior to this lesson, I didn't know that the Scientific Method had been renamed in curriculums. The steps and method of thinking are still used. The scientific method teaches students the steps to take when coming to a conclusion while the scientific inquiry takes those steps and allows students to use them. Scientific Inquiry allows students to think about what is true and how they can prove it. Moving forward I will be mindful to use these strategies in all my lessons. It will allow students to become familiar with evidence-based answers.

The Characteristics of Life and What it Means to Be Alive

I usually think of birth and motherhood when referring to life on earth. After this lesson I understand that life is a result of the complex chemistry on earth all living things have metabolisms, complete homeostasis, reproduce, and diversify. After completing this module I’ve learned how truly complex life is. When thinking of every type of animal, insect, plant, and microorganism I now wonder about all of their inner workings. How did they begin to how they are now.

Before this lesson I understood this concept but not so much as it refers to organisms. I know that the tiniest change can cause a huge consequence be it negative or positive. The slightest change in pressure temperature can affect an organism. NS 100 has opened my eye to new terms and what they mean.

How My Scientific Perspective Has Changed Since The Beginning of The Semester

Before the semester began I only viewed science as a subject we teach to children. I assumed I would not be interested in this class because I'm not a science teacher. So far I have truly enjoyed the lessons and assignments in this class. I have gained new knowledge and depend my understanding of life itself and what science is. Moving forward I will be open to gaining more knowledge as it pertains to science.

How My Experiences With NS 100 Relate to Your Apprenticeship in The Classroom

Prior to NS 100 I did not think science applied to me as an educator. I now know I can use scientific strategies with any subject in the classroom. The knowledge I obtained allows to think deeply about life and how science exists in every way. Moving forward I will try to create the excitement science experiments bring into the classroom. I will now ask myself questions like, "How can I create a hands on lesson in ELA?"
