Vocabulary is crucial to reading comprehension, because readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing the words within a specific text. Students must learn the meaning of new words that are not part of their normal vocabulary in order to understand more complex texts, or texts about specific topics. Students should have explicit and robust instruction to vocabulary in order to support their reading comprehension and communication.
