Reason: Qualifications makes you stand out from other applicants.
Evidence: Based on 2019’s statistics, the majority (32.4%) of singaporeans aged 25 and above have at least a degree. As compared to the statistics in 2009, Singaporeans with a university degree was 22.5%, which is a significant increase. The degree holders will most likely increase in the subsequent years, which indicates that if it were to increase, they would be left behind.
Explanation: since the majority are degree holders, by employing people without degrees, it implies that the company isn’t hiring the best people for the position. as an employer, they would want the best candidate that could improve their company most.

Reason: qualifications can be an indicator for a prerequisite for most jobs
Explanation: There are thousands of other applicants that apply for the same job and since the employers do not know them personally, a higher qualification would distinguish you from the rest, and affirms the employers that you have a strong foundation from the start.
Evidence: Getting the specialised diplomas and degrees assures the employers that they have the skill set the job requires.

If we do not have the relevant skills, we can at least fall back to our qualifications. Skills can always be developed over the years. We can always learn skills, but what about theorical based? It'll be hard to survive if you have no theorical knowledge. Furthermore, if your skills are not in line with what the workforce requires, it's useless. Let's just face the truth, we are all here to get good grades to be qualified enough for university, and then enroll and graduate out of university with qualifications, right? And that's particularly because qualifications are still important. Without background theorical knowledge, whatever that is said and done will sound alienated.

REASON : most university graduates are not prepared for the work life
EXPLANATION : graduates do not have work experience are not able to apply their skills when working and the sudden shift from studying to working environment may result in inefficiency. work life requires a lot of skills that university graduates without the preferred skills may not adapt well to work life.
EVIDENCE : close to seven in 10 of those who graduate from four local universities in 2020 found permanent employment, down from 81.7% in 2019, according to an annual joint graduate employee survey released on Friday(19 Feb)

REASON : work experience is becoming the preferred attribute for employers
EXPLANATION : skill and knowledge based training integrated within the work setting is perhaps the most effective means to build talent within an organisation
EVIDENCE : employers place more weight on experience, particularly internships and employment during school vs academic credentials including GPA and college major when evaluating a recent graduate for employment

In this current day and age, many jobs require practical skills such as being able to handle tasks, having good leadership skills, as well as being able to work in a team etc.
A degree alone is insufficient in telling of one's ability in that specific sector, going deeper, should an applicant hold a bachelor's degree, why should he be employed? It does not show how the applicant is able to do the job well nor does it show how he is suitable for the job either.

On the other hand, an applicant with years of working experience has the edge on the former. Should he have years of working experience under his belt in that specific sector, it will serve to tell the employer how capable the applicant is. With experience comes knowledge, one with 5 years of working experience has much more practical knowledge and skills that are not able to be penned down on paper.

However, this would obviously not be applicable to very technical sectors such as engineering, accountancy, law, etc,as a baseline of education like a masters degree would be very helpful is showing how the applicant has the presumed knowledge in being able to comprehend and complete given tasks well.

Nevertheless, it should go without saying that the perfect candidate should have both theoretical knowledge AND practical skills in order to be able to get the job done

Stand:Disagree
Reason: Firstly, qualifications are the minimum criteria in order to get the job.
Explanation: To job employers, it serves as a gauge of one' calibre, capability and ability. If applicants are unable to meet the criteria they are not eligible at all. Due to the current times where job demand is high, competition between job applicants is fierce and besides being able to meet the minimum qualification they are chosen by whose cert is more superior. Put in short job applicants are chosen according to merit. Therefore the higher the qualifications, the higher the chance of getting the job.
Evidence: "A 2007 study by the ministry of manpower showed that every year of schooling increases a worker's earnings by 13.7%. The rate is higher for further and more advanced educafion."

Reason:
With the increase of automation and advances in technology, the need for street-smart people outweighs the need for ‘textbook’ people.
Explaination:
The adequate knowledge can allow one to enter an industry, but every industry is made up of people not machines. Hence, for the employees to meet the company’s goals, one must have the soft-skills to communicate and collaborate with each other.
Evidence:
Studies have shown that L&D leaders who are mainly people that deal with management of companies place an increasing emphasis of the importance in the growth of their employee’s ‘people skills’. To achieve this, they have sent their employees to participate in soft-skills training programmes. The pushing factor towards this action, being the belief that the hard skills deemed important in this present-day could be automated tomorrow, but it is the human touch that can’t be replicated. Not only that but, these soft skills don’t just increase the performance of the individual, but the company as a collective.

Reason: Academic qualifications provide crucial skills and knowledge to a particular job.
Explanation: The qualifications can act as an ‘entry ticket’ or a source of skills useful for a future promotion.
Evidence:A research conducted by C. Clark, promotions are reliant on proficient qualifications and useful character which are important to the development of formal qualifications such as administrative qualities, social skills and so on.
