This dark and gloomy forest represents the setting of Young Goodman Brown. This setting creates a very suspenseful atmosphere where Brown finds himself away from "civilization" in a forest where there is evil and danger.

People are not always as they seem

This is prevalent throughout the story as Brown realizes all the townspeople whom he thought were faithful and pious actually worshipped the devil. We even see this within Brown as the devil he meets resembles himself which gives the impression of an "evil doppelganger".

Dream or Reality

It is unclear to the reader and Brown whether or not Brown was dreaming and imagining the entire thing. This creates a sense of mystery and blurs the lines between perception and reality, which is a key aspect of Gothic fiction.

Snake

The devil's staff was depicted as moving and almost alive in the form of a black snake. Like the snake in Adam and Eve, the snake in YGB also symbolizes temptation and evil, especially from the devil.

Pink ribbons

The pink ribbon in Young Goodman Brown represents Faith's innocence and purity. When Brown sees the pink ribbon floating down from the sky, he believes that she has lost her innocence and turned to the devil.
