Cognitive Psychology was founded after people became dissatisfied with the Behaviorist approach. Many argued that Behaviorists had little emphasis on the internal processes that the mind undergoes and therefore created Cognitive Psychology. The father of Cognitive Psychology, Ulric Neisser (pictured above), focused on perspective and memory and how the two are correlated and can alter due to layered memories rather than the actual events that take place. Cognitivists value thinking and mental processes as their guides to behavior (Cherry, 2019).

Benjamin Rush, one of the fathers of Psychobiology or psychiatry, believed that mental illnesses were actually caused by irritation of the blood vessels in the brain. Psychiatry focused mainly on psychiatric patients in hospitals but also learned why people may behave in the way they do or what causes them to act a certain way. Their biology and physiology will directly influence their actions (Mandal, 2018).

The Sociocultural psychology derived from the interest of the impact of society on a person or individual development. People learn from the culture that they live in and are able to be influenced by the people or society they surround themselves with. People learn from the interactions that they have with others to learn higher- order functions. Socio Culturalists believe that people develop their behavior based on the normalities in that specific group (Cherry, 2019).

Gestalt psychology is a school of thought that looks at the human mind and behavior as a whole. When we are trying to make sense of the world around us, gestalt tells us that we shouldn't focus on every small component. Instead our minds will perceive objects as part of a greater whole, and as elements of more complex systems. (Cherry 2021)
