There are four testimonies given to a Kyoto city official who is investigating the mysterious death. The woodcutter who found the body that morning speaks first, he confirms the location of the deserted bamboo grove where he found the corpse. Then, a traveling Buddhist priest says he saw a man, a woman, and a horse the day before just after noon. Next, a policeman testifies that he has caught a bandit named Tajomaru, who is sadly known for raping women around Kyoto. The policeman think Tajomaru is responsible and that the magistrate should question him. The fourth testimony is delivered by the young woman's mother, who confirms that her daughter Masago and Masago's husband Takehiro, had been traveling in the hills the day before. She breaks down crying, worried for her missing daughter's safety.

Tajomaru confesses to having killed Takehiro. He did this because of Masago's beauty, he wanted her for himself. He tookTakehiro into a bamboo grove and acted like he was going to sell him treasure stolen from an aristocrat. Tajomaru then tied Takehiro up and unfortanately raped Masago. She then asked him to kill either himself or her husband, saying she would be with the one who lived. Tajomaru untied Takehiro and challenged him to a sword fight that ended in Tajomaru stabbing Takehiro in the chest. Meanwhile, Masago escaped, so Tajomaru left the forest with Takehiro's weapons and rode Masago's horse until he was caught. Tajomaru knows his fate and asks that he be executed by hanging at the tree outside the prison.

Nacha dies because of the wedding cake incident. I cannot begin to imagine the pain Tita must feel for knowing that in a way this may have been her fault. She lost someone important to her. The story takes a passionate turn as Tita prepares a meal. Everyone enjoys it and some people are filled with lustful desires. Her sister goes into a shower to cool off but instead a fire ignites in her causing her to burn up and run off with a man on a horse. I was not expecting the story to take such a turn out of reality.

The final consummation of the passion between Tita and Pedro is both tragic and triumphant in that the light of Tita's inner fire is finally free to blaze, but only at the expense of her earthly life. It is perhaps only now that Tita's inner fire can truly burn, as she has, for the first time, made an active decision based on her desires, leaving behind the constricting confines of the cultural role into which she was forced throughout her life.
