“What would a psychologist want with a nursery?” (page 2)

When his wife Lydia asks him to look at the nursery because she was worried about what she saw, George did not seem to care and was very nonchalant about the idea. This shows that he is not caring and does not pay attention. He does not care about his children enough to care about what was going on. Also he does not understand the seriousness of a situation if his wife thinks a physiologist should be called.

"A shadow flickered over Mr. McClean’s hot face. Many shadows flickered. The
vultures were dropping down the blazing sky.
“A cup of tea?” asked Wendy in the silence"

When the parents are soon killed by the lions, the children have o remorse. When the physiologist shows up they have no regret and the only thing on there mind is eating and jut having a fun day with a picnic. This shows that Wendy and Peter has no respect for there parents and that having the house raise them has not taught them everything that a normal person would learn from a human parent.

Irony

The irony of this story is the fact that in the end the house is more of parents to Wendy and Peter. The house does everything that George and Lydia are supposed to be doing. So when the children have to pick someone, the nursery or there parents, they end up picking the house. This is due to the fact that the parents have no relationship with there parents because the house is taking over the responsibilities of George and Lydia.
"this house which clothed and fed and rocked
them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them." (page 2).

Another sign or irony is at the end of the story when the psychologist shows up and the lions are chomping on the rest of the parents bodies in the background. Meanwhile the children are having a picnic enjoying themselves and having no regret for the fact that they had just murdered there parents.
Parents are supposed to be one of the most important people in a child's life and these children had no problem throwing them away because the house was doing everything that the parents were doing. This means that the children had no relationship with there parents.

"He stared at the two children seated in the center of the open glade eating a little picnic
lunch. Beyond them was the water hole and the yellow veldtland; above was the hot
sun. He began to perspire. “Where are your father and mother?”

Theme

The underlying theme of "The Veldt" is that too much technology will eventually lead to the demise of the human race. We as humans develop technology to take over tasks that we do not want to do. However the more tasks they takeover, the more power the technology gains. In "The Veldt" technology has become the sole parent to Peter and Wendy, this causes the kids to have no feelings of love toward their parents. The lack of relationship between the children and their parents allows the children to feel no remorse after feeding their parents to lions. This is because to these kids, those people are not their parents, the technology is.
"The two children were in hysterics. They screamed and pranced and threw
things. They yelled and sobbed and swore and jumped at the furniture. 'You can’t do that to the nursery, you can’t'" (Bradbury 10)

House vs. Parents
“But I thought that’s why we bought this house, so we wouldn’t have to do
anything?”
“That’s just it. I feel like I don’t belong here. The house is wife and mother now,
and nursemaid. Can I compete with an African veldt? Can I give a bath and scrub the
children as efficiently or quickly as the automatic scrub bath can? I cannot. And it
isn’t just me. It’s you. You’ve been awfully nervous lately.”
The parents feel as they are in competition with the house it feels almost out of place that the house takes care of everything from cooking to bathing the kids.
Parents vs. Kids
“You know how difficult Peter is about that. When I punished him a month ago by
locking the nursery for even a few hours — the tantrum be threw! And Wendy too.
They live for the nursery.”
The kids have almost accepted and cared for their nursery more than their own parents. I feel as if the house could give orders the kids would be more obedient towards the house.

The nursery replaces the parents. The children feel more affection towards the room than their own parents. Due to the love they feel for the room they see their parents as disposable. “Don’t let them do it!” wailed Peter at the ceiling, as if he was talking to the house,
the nursery. “Don’t let Father kill everything.” He turned to his father. “Oh, I hate you!”
“Insults won’t get you anywhere.”

The children have a picnic after killing their parents which shows their apathy towards them. “Well, here I am,” said David McClean in the nursery doorway, “Oh, hello.” He stared at the two children seated in the center of the open glade eating a little picnic
lunch.

"Mr. Hadley looked at his wife and they turned and looked back at the beasts edging slowly forward crouching, tails stiff. "
The theme of this story is technology and obviously technologically enhanced walls wouldn't be able to produce real lions like in the story. The lions that were a figment of the children's imagination and lived within the walls couldn't have possibly become real and eat Mr and Mrs Hadley. This is an exaggeration showing that if technology advances too much it could be harmful to the way people live. In the story the house took care of all of the families needs and took over the roll as parents in the children's lives.
