Difficulties for Women in Agriculture

Something getting in the way of women's success in agriculture globally is land rights. In the world, only 10-20% of women have their own land rights. The first major thing that gets in the way is the male dominated industry. Most of the agriculture industry is run by men so women are not taken as seriously. The second thing is, in some countries women still can't own their own land. This cuts out many women from having land right abilities.

During Covid-19, more women started to join the food distribution community. They have turned to delivery and distribution companies like DoorDash, UberEats and Instacart to make money during a time where many were losing/out of jobs. These companies pay enough to help families stay above water in a last resort. According to Uber, the amount of women delivering has doubled since the beginning of the pandemic.

In developing countries with subsistence agriculture, women make up 43% of agricultural workers. Women lead in developing countries compared to stable countries using commercial agriculture. It is important women take the lead because developing countries need more work. Women are known to be more productive than men.

According to the US Agriculture Census, 36% of U.S. farmers are women. While it isn't the highest percentage for a country, it still counts many people due to the US' high population. Women are strong leads in agriculture in the US. 56% of all farms have at least one female decision maker.

Women contribute to the food and agriculture industry in many ways. Some jobs they hold are farmer owners, farm workers, agricultural educators and researchers. These jobs can take place in both commercial and subsistence farming. Female decisions weigh in American farming culture.
