Chapter 2 Main Ideas

*Summer is just ending, Dill goes back home to Meridian.

*Scout goes to school for her first time. She is in first grade.

*She meets her first grade teacher, Miss Caroline Fisher, who is from Northern Alabama.

*During the class Miss Caroline reads the students a story about cats, but most of the children "were immune to imaginative literature."

*After reading the book, Miss Caroline wrote on the blackboard the alphabet. She asked, "'Does anybody know what these are?' Everyone did; most of the first grade had failed it last year"(Lee 22).

*Miss Caroline then asks Scout to read, but then she realizes that Atticus has already taught her to read. She then demands her to stop because Atticus isn't a licensed teacher.

*At recess, Scout complains to Jem about the whole situation. He says that his teacher said that Miss Caroline is trying a new teaching style in which Jem calls it "the Dewey Decimal System."

*In this new teaching style, there is a lot of free time. So Scout was writing a letter (in cursive) to Dill when Miss Caroline caught her. Miss Caroline told Scout to stop learning from Atticus, but Scout really had learned it from Calpurnia on rainy days.

*Miss Caroline is looking through all the students' lunches when she finds that Walter doesn't have one. She offers him a quarter for lunch but he refuses. Scout then steps in to explain that Walter is a Cunningham. When Miss Caroline doesn't understand what Scout is trying to say, she laughs at her, tells her to come up to the front of class, and pats her hand with a ruler.

*The class starts laughing, not realizing that the taps from the ruler were a punishment. After the bell rings for lunch, Miss Caroline collapses her head in her hands at her desk.

"'Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now.' I mumbled that I was sorry and retired meditating upon my crime"(Lee 23).

Analysis- Scout's first grade teacher, Miss Caroline, makes her feel bad about being able to read, when she should feel proud to read and write at such a young age. Scout even apologizes and refers to her skill as a crime. This demonstrates how many people in Maycomb are very small minded in their views.

"'You mean we can't play any more?' I asked. 'We'll do like we always do at home,' he said, 'but you'll see- school's different'"(Lee 21).

Analysis- Jem is talking to Scout about playing. Since school is starting up, Jem doesn't want to be seen with his little sister because it may be embarrassing in front of his friends. He just wants to look cool in front of his friends. With his sister around, he is less cool. So he tells Scout that they can still play; but only at home.

"'If he didn't teach you, who did?' Miss Caroline asked good-naturedly. 'Somebody did. You weren't born reading The Mobile Register'"(Lee 22).

Analysis- Miss Caroline is talking to Scout about how good she is at reading already. Miss Caroline thinks that Atticus taught Scout how to read. Scout claims that Atticus has no time to teach her; that he's so tired at night that he just sits in the livingroom and reads. She also says that she was born reading The Mobile Register ; at least that is what Jem says. Scout then continues talking about stuff Miss Caroline doesn't believe so she says, "Let's not let our imaginations run away with us dear"(Lee 22).

"'You don't have to learn much out of books that way- it's like if you wanta study cows, you go milk one, see"(Lee 24).

Analysis- Jem is trying to explain to Scout that the way Miss Caroline is teaching is just a new way of teaching for the first grade. Scout is confused of why Jem says this, wondering if he'd lost his mind. What Jem means by this statement is that if you want to learn about something, you go try it yourself and you can figure out more about what you're investigating. If you are interested in something, you can learn about it,; that is what Jem is trying to say to Scout.

There is one major reason that Chapter 2 furthers the plot. For example, it strengthens the character development of our main characters. Scout is getting older and now is going to school. She is learning how to talk with her classmates and other people she may not know. Now that she has more knowledge, she is starting to think about things in a more educated way.
