Ban GOT production as it has led to overtourism and the production team is not following the protocols and damaging the heritage sites

UNESCO's Role in Managing Sustainable Tourism in Dubrovnik

As UNESCO, our primary concern is ensuring the preservation and protection of Dubrovnik's cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism development. We recognize the significant economic benefits that tourism brings, but we must also address the challenges of overtourism and its impact on the city's historical integrity.

Key Considerations

Overtourism: Dubrovnik has experienced a surge in visitor numbers, leading to overcrowding, congestion, and potential damage to its UNESCO World Heritage site status.

Sustainable Tourism Development: There is a need to balance tourism growth with the preservation of Dubrovnik's cultural heritage and the well-being of its residents.

Stakeholder Collaboration: Effective management of tourism requires cooperation among various stakeholders, including the local government, tourism industry, and local communities.

Proposed Solutions

Implement a Tourism Carrying Capacity Study: Conduct a comprehensive study to determine the maximum number of visitors Dubrovnik can accommodate without compromising its cultural heritage and the quality of life for residents.

Develop a Sustainable Tourism Strategy: Create a long-term strategy that aligns with UNESCO's guidelines for sustainable tourism development, focusing on preserving cultural heritage, promoting responsible tourism practices, and engaging local communities.

Enhance Visitor Management: Introduce measures such as timed entry tickets, visitor flow management, and dispersal strategies to reduce congestion and distribute visitors more evenly throughout the city.

Promote Responsible Tourism Practices: Collaborate with the tourism industry to encourage sustainable practices, such as promoting off-season travel, supporting local businesses, and educating visitors on responsible behavior.

Invest in Heritage Conservation: Allocate a portion of tourism revenue towards the conservation and restoration of Dubrovnik's cultural heritage sites, ensuring their long-term preservation.

Engage Local Communities: Involve local communities in the decision-making process and ensure that they benefit from tourism development, both economically and socially.

By implementing these solutions, UNESCO aims to work with Dubrovnik and its stakeholders to manage tourism sustainably, protect its cultural heritage, and ensure the well-being of its residents. We are committed to providing guidance and support to help Dubrovnik achieve its goals of sustainable tourism development.

UNESCO's Role in Managing Tourism at World Heritage Sites

As the United Nations agency responsible for the World Heritage Convention, UNESCO plays a crucial role in providing guidance and support for managing tourism at World Heritage sites. Here are some key points:

Sustainable Tourism Policy and Strategy Development

UNESCO advocates for policies and frameworks that support sustainable tourism as a means of managing cultural and natural heritage

It develops strategies through stakeholder engagement for planning, developing and managing sustainable tourism that follows a destination approach and empowers local communities

Sustainable Tourism Tools and Guidance

UNESCO has developed a "Sustainable Tourism Toolkit" with step-by-step guides for World Heritage site managers and stakeholders to identify suitable solutions for their local contexts

The guides cover topics like establishing foundations for sustainable tourism, managing tourism infrastructure, and engaging local communities

Capacity Building

UNESCO conducts capacity building activities to enhance the skills of World Heritage communities in sustainable tourism management

This includes supporting sustainable tourism recovery in the wake of crises and building resilience in local communities

Policy Orientations

The World Heritage Committee has adopted policy orientations defining the relationship between World Heritage and sustainable tourism

These orientations provide frameworks for World Heritage properties to adequately address tourism before inscription and monitor its impact

By providing policy guidance, tools, and capacity building support, UNESCO aims to facilitate the development of sustainable tourism at World Heritage properties. This helps protect the properties' Outstanding Universal Value while fostering stakeholder cooperation and balanced participation
