I heard once that PLN's stifle teacher creativity because some use them to bag, borrow, and steal lesson plans or ideas. I completely disagree!

PLN's are great tools for enhancing the learning experience for both student and teacher. Rather than stifling creativity, a PLN opens the world up for a teacher and in turn for the student to explore many more options than previously able.

As we are in the age of connectivity, PLN's are going to be an irreplaceable asset to teachers. I think the increased sharing will make the learning world seem much more accessible. We all want the best for our students and exploring new ideas and ways to implement them is the way to go, PLN's will definitely help with that!

Professional and personal PLN's, however, should remain separate. The content that we post to our personal pages (like facebook, twitter, pinterest, etc.) is always available to our students and the community. We, as preservice teachers, strive for very different connections when it comes to our professional lives versus our personal lives.

I think if used properly, PLN's are a wonderful resource to enhance learning and the way teachers educate. Used improperly or mixing personal with professional can lead to consequences for the user.

To me, it is all a matter of balancing our personal, professional, and moral online identities.

It may seem daunting to new teachers that are just starting out to dive into the world of PLN's, but there is lots of support online on how to set up and be a part of PLN's. As opposed to the older teachers that must strive to keep their classrooms current and try to learn how to utilize PLN's after years of different practices, the new teachers and preservice teachers that are beginning their teaching career now have a unique advantage to start off with PLN immersion.
