Native Tribe

The Missouri Indians were part of the southern Sioux tribe that lived near Nebraska and Missouri. They lived in earthen domes, farmed, and hunted buffalo. They had their numbers depleted when smallpox struck the tribes, so they grouped up with the neighboring Oto tribe. When the tribes combined they had roughly 250 people. When Lewis and Clark came to their place, most of the people were hunting so they kept going down stream. Soon after some smaller chiefs of the tribe met up with the corps at their camp and they invited them to a council in the morning. The next morning the chiefs of the Oto and Missouri tribes had a meeting with Lewis and Clark. They gave the chiefs some gifts and they told them that if they trade with the U.S they will be protected. In 1805 the chiefs went to Jefferson and they hoped for peace and started trading goods.

I chose the Porcupine as my animal because they are a somewhat weird looking creature. The corps must’ve thought that the animal was a mystic creature for having spikes on its back. It is an animal with brownish fur that has somewhat white spikes all over its body. When threatened the animal will shoot its spikes at the enemy.

For the plant I chose the Biscuitroot. I chose the biscuit root because it looked different than normal roots and the way its used is different. The people that found it must’ve been confused on the purpose of it because it looks like a clump of dirt. The use was to bake it into a light bread that was easy to carry and trade. When cooked it turns into a brown mush that is eaten.

2nd Person

For my second person I would choose Private Joseph Field. He was an excellent hunter and woodsman and was one of the first to be enlisted. If he was one of the first people to be enlisted, than he must be valuable to the expedition. He was about 30 years old at the time of the expedition, which means he had to be in good condition for the expedition. As a skilled hunter and woodsman he would know what parts of the animal are important, and how to capture an animal. With being able to hunt he could get food for the people so they don’t starve.

I would choose Sergeant Patrick Gass. Gass joined the military in 1789, and the expedition was in 1804. That means that he has 15 years of experience in the military. He would know how to act and be professional on the trip. He also must’ve been determined to be in the expedition and must’ve been a good soldier. When he asked to be a part, Captain Bissell said no because he wanted Gass’s craftmanship’s skills. If he was a good craftsman, than he could help make tools and other necessary items for the expedition.

I would bring the tables for longitude and latitude. I would bring them because they are essential to mapping out a place.

I would bring the drugs for blistering, salivation, and increased Kidney Output. I would bring them because they have multiple uses and would be a valuable asset for sick soldiers.

I would bring a hand compass. I would bring the compass to navigate through the new land.

I would bring mosquito nets over the camping supplies. I would bring them because they could protect the soldiers from diseases from mosquitoes.

Lastly I would bring the sewing needles because they could be traded, used to make clothes, and make tents.

These will be useful because for food and clothing they could hunt, and make tents and clothes out of the needles and hides from the animals.
