Distance learning is a form of education where students are learning without in-person interactions with professors/teachers. The U.S. Department of Education defines distance education as "the application of telecommunications and electronic devices which enable students and learners to receive instruction from some distant location" (Bruder, 1989). Distance education programs were traditionally designed for nontraditional students, fully employed students, and students unable to attend classroom lectures. Distance learning has expanded due to "the great distances of citizens from educational institutions, both geographically and socio-economically and the rapid advancement of technology" (Casey, 2008).

Video: (Studyportals, 2012)

Course Design

Successful distant learning programs provide online courses that are organized and have structure. An effective course design provides students with "clear guidelines and expectations for students" (Lister, 2014). Learners are more likely to be successful in an online course if they have access to course information, announcements from instructors, grading policies, and assignment instructions and due dates. All of these features provide structure for students to ensure their academic success throughout the course. Educators should design the course to ensure "students are familiar with the available resources and tools in the learning environment" (Lister, 2014). Clear course structure and easily accessed resources must be included in the design of the course to guarantee students can use materials effectively. Course design is essential to student success in online courses.

(Chan, 2015)

Content Presentation

Student choice and a variety of activities are key characteristics of distant learning programs. Course content should be provided to students through a variety of activities, authentic tasks, reflective assignments, and assessments. Content presentation that is provided through these methods allows for students to engage in activities that are "consistent with their learning interests and needs" (Lister, 2014). Authentic learning opportunities allow students to partake in meaningful activities which support student learning and increase academic success. Reflective assignments encourage students to connect their lives to course content which increases student engagement. (Lister, 2014) Content presentation is critical for student success because it meets the various needs of all students and provides a quality education.

(Petley, 2015)

Interaction is a critical component to a successful distant learning program. Online courses should include opportunities for student-to-student interactions as well as student-to-instructor interactions. Collaboration amongst peers both formally and informally develop a sense of community within the course. Collaboration increase student success because it provides opportunities for students to assist each other in group assignments and interact with students from diverse backgrounds. (Lister, 2014) Student-to-instructor interaction is mainly conducted through feedback. Instructors should provide clear and constructive feedback to students. Instructors should give "prompt and timely feedback" because it has a "direct impact on the success of students’ learning" (Lister, 2014). Expectations regarding timeliness and communication should be established at the start of a course.

(Williams, 2014)
