         <title>What was The Manhattan Project? </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The beginning of the Manhattan Project could be dated back to December 6th, 1941, but after the U.S. entry into World War II, the war department took over half of the responsibility of this project and General Leslie Groves was put in charge of code name "Manhattan Project" which was the construction of the first atomic bomb.&nbsp;<br><br>The first atomic bomb exploded at 5:30 am on July 16,1945 at a sight on the Alamogordo air base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On August 2, 1939, Albert Einstein signed a 2-page letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt essentially "begging" the U.S. to get involved in the nuclear arms race that would forever change the course of history.&nbsp;<br><br>Einstein had learned that German scientists had discovered nuclear fission which is the process of splitting an atom's nucleus to release energy.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The decision to drop the atomic bombs on 2 Japanese cities remains one of the most controversial topics.&nbsp;<br><br>The U.S. was interested in using atomic bombs as a way of ending the war quickly with less casualties (on their side). Also the U.S. thought it was a way to keep the Soviet Union from entering in the war and fighting in the pacific.&nbsp;<br><br>According to President Truman, there were 2 options. Either continue fighting a prolonged war against Japan or work on acquiring a functional atomic bomb and end the war with devastating attacks on Japan. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On August 9th, 1945, a second bomb was dropped by the United States on the industrial Japanese city of Nagasaki.&nbsp;<br><br>The bomb, nicknamed "Fat Man" was dropped at 11:02 am at 1,650 feet above the city. The bomb killed approximately 60,000 to 80,000 people.&nbsp;<br><br>This bomb resulted in Japan surrendering in the war. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The two atomic assaults were the most devastating in history. The actual number of people that were killed as a result of these bombings is a figure that is hard to capture because of a number of factors such as the people that were killed instantly as well as the people that were died over time as a result of the radiation.<br><br>Hiroshima was flattened over 4.6 miles with over 69% of the city's buildings being destroyed.&nbsp;<br><br>On August 14, 1945, Japan surrendered bringing an end to World War II.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In my opinion, I do believe the United States was wrong in creating and using the bombs to prompt Japan into surrendering in the war.&nbsp;<br><br>I understand that the U.S. wanted to prevent the deaths of more American soldiers if the war didn't come to an end but I think that the destruction that followed as a result of the bombings was inexcusable. I believe that there should have or could have been another way to win the war without taking the lives of thousands of people and destroying two cities. </div>]]></description>
