I believe it's important to develop a personal vision for a couple reasons - one is because it helps provide a little clarity. I'm a goal-setting person, so to see a vision of where I want to be and my expectations along the way keeps me focused. It also serves as a motivation for me because it's hard to gauge progress without having a defined personal vision.

I believe creating most things as a shared group is going to get you more productive results than when it's a top-down order. As a team, we want to move forward, it's easier to move forward as a group when you all want to head the same direction - or at least if you all have respect for the same direction you're headed.

For the same reasons one would want to have a shared mission of what you're all working together to do, I think it's important to create a shared vision. As a principal, I want my own vision of where I see the school going, but there are important stake-holders who need a voice and a say in where we see. It also gives us something on which to measure if we're reaching our vision.

When any group is working together, time can be more productive, relationships can be healthier, and more progress can be made if it is clear what the group will value. I've been able to work in a group in which we began by defining our shared values as a group, and it headed off a lot of conflicts down the road. It seems simple, but to say we value one another's time, I think people were more likely to arrive in a timely manner. When the values move to bigger things like the spiritual lives of our students, our goals and our work moves deeper.

Many people may take for granted the values that a Catholic school may have, but it is interesting to really delve into the uniqueness of every parish and school. To name and go through the process is absolutely important at the outset, especially as the values establish the "how" in the process.

Once we know what is important, and where people feel resources, time and energy should be spent, it is much easier to formulate the goals. It is likewise important then to go to that next step, to clearly define shared goals, after values, vision and mission helped establish the how, what and why.

Wasn't exactly sure if this question was asking about the CSS Characteristics of Successful Schools, or the CST Center on School Turnaround. I will assume how the CSS plan fits into the 4 pillars for student success. Vision, leadership, development, partnership and success are all tied into the 4 pillars, as we look at the full complexity of what it really does take to be successful. It is not one element, but rather a comprehensive, interrelated process that involves a variety of moving parts, people, and vision and leadership for real results to happen. Success is not simple, and looking at it with a systematic approach is more manageable than just "doing our best" and hoping things will turn out ok for the students and families in our schools.

A shared mission will be critical to running a successful school because it will allow everyone to voice why we are here. Everyone might have a personal mission and personal goals for his or her own professional life and classroom, but we also need to have a common goal as a school community. We need to work together to establish why we are here, doing what we do everyday, because it will allow us to have a shared purpose. I think that a shared mission will help us all make decisions that benefit the common good and establish priorities and goals as an entire school, not just individuals. If everyone works just as individuals, you miss the community aspect and some goals might conflict with each other, which would not be good for the school.

In additional to shared a mission, a shared vision is also important. As a school community, we don't only need to establish why we are here, but what our goals are as well. Again, that is not something that just one person should decide. Since everyone needs to commit to the vision in order to work toward it, people need to voice what is important to them and what they see as the vision for our school. If just one person decides the vision, people will not feel ownership. If the vision is developed as a shared vision, more people will feel ownership and will be an active part of the journey to that vision. A shared vision will also help clarify the direction the school is moving so that decisions can be made keeping that shared vision in mind.

Having shared values sets a standard that everyone agrees to. As an administrator, it is important to have values because it holds people accountable on all levels. But everyone has different personal values, so developing shared values sets clear expectations for the school community, in addition to personal values. Shared values provide clarity and consistency and give others an opportunity for contribution. Again, creating something that is shared will give people ownership and direction. Especially in a Catholic school, we want to make sure that we are embodying and modelling certain values in the choices we make and how we conduct ourselves. By creating shared values, it holds everyone to the same expectation and gives everyone the same guidelines as we work toward our mission and vision.

In order to establish mission, vision, values, and goals, we need to have these characteristics present in our school and in each of these pillars. To really create an environment that celebrates equity and diversity, we need to incorporate these characteristics into every aspect of our school. While some might fit most specifically into just one pillar, something like family, school, and community involvement can be incorporated into a school's mission, vision, values, and goals. In order to create a successful school with a successful future, we need these characteristics to permeate throughout all four pillars we establish.

Domain 1 Turnaround is developing goals, milestones of low performing schools and establishing and communicating the urgent need that all students receive a high quality education. This aligns with pillar one mission because this asks why do we exist and the fundamental purpose of the school is to give each and every child a high quality education. Domain 2 is Talent Development stating that this school needs to have committed teachers at every level and in every position. Policies and procedures are established with admin. to select, place and retain model teachers and leaders. While recruiting, retaining, and developing talent and providing professional learning opportunities. Pillar two vision states the hope and sense of direction they hope their school to become. Providing future insight and shared knowledge about best practices for student achievement. Domain 3 Instructional Transformations talks about effective instruction, standard based teaching, data based differentiation, individualization, research based, classroom management for optimal student learning. This aligns to values in the collective commitment and work of a PLC. Here we are measuring effectiveness of all our school academics and responding to what works and what does not work. My favorite one is the culture shift of commitment of all people involved in the student learning. A great shift toward high academic expectations and a concerted effort with teachers, parents, students, community members, etc. . . This aligns to pillar goals because we need to be mindful of our purpose and actually integrate our school purpose, vision, and commitments to our mission that all students receive a high quality education. CST and pillars are a model to improve the student and teacher learning.

I remember a lot of great short quotes that are full of meaning and energy. I feel that is what Pillar one is supposed to be. Together our staff needs to create and bring to life a school mantra. A school mission power house saying to drive each work day and make meaning for why our school exist!

The personal vision of the administrator is critical for the success of a school (or any institution for that matter) . Without a personal vision, the administrator has no foundation for action on any level - any attempts would be "casting about" for an answer at best. The vision of the administrator comes from his/her own education, experience, and world-view. However, the administrator is not God, or even omniscient. Thus the administrator must recognize the goals, objectives, and world-view of the institution itself, especially if it is the Church. The successful Catholic school administrator will come to know and recognize the wisdom of these institutional issues and make them his/her own. This does not take away the individuality of the administrator, it does, in fact, set the boundaries within which the administrator's own experience and education will flower forth in greater creativity responding to the challenges that each individual situation and changing time requires.

Shared Mission - Fr. Michael Vision has to start with the institution, next the administrator, and then the faculty, staff, and community. There has to be a leader, but there must then be someone to lead, and they won't follow unless they believe in the foundational principles first of all; and then have input in applying those principles to the specific context represented by that school. Once this is accomplished they will have the ownership necessary to put their all into making it happen. This is shared mission.

At first I would have thought that shared vision would precede shared vision; however, I guess there has to be a mission that is shared before there can be a vision about how to accomplish that mission.
The vision is about how to accomplish the mission and I would refer back to what I said in the "mission" response. I guess that two are quite similar except for one (mission) being the goal and the other (vision) what the goal is going to look like. I have found this to be particularly important as I seek to bring institutional change to Sacred Heart - Cashton. So far, I've got the faculty sharing the mission but wanting more information in order to share in the vision; the parents are by and large with both mission and vision. This is only to be expected since it is the teachers who will have to do the actual work, which will probably include some retraining.

Without shared values there will be no ability to accomplish the mission, and indeed the vision would be something less than fundamental and thus truly shared. This is probably one of the most difficult things with regards to parents. Faculty & staff need to be on board. This can be brought about by establishing the values that must be shared to a great extent. With parents however, we are talking about the source of our students. Will the values necessary for a school to be a truly "Catholic" school be shared by enough parents for the school to be viable? What is the administrator, pastor, and other leaders willing to do if those fundamental "Catholic" values are not embraced by parents and the community? This, I think, is one of the critical questions facing Catholic education.

It would seem, in a school setting, that shared goals would be pretty obvious. However, they clearly are not. Goals can vary widely between parents, faculty, community, and administrators. Is the goal "graduation rate"? Percentage going on to college? success with the ACT, Forward Wisconsin, number of blue ribbons from the US Dept. of Education? Disciples for Christ? I've seen many schools - Catholic and public - with a real variety of goals. What is our goal?

From my perspective Characteristics of Successful Schools and the four pillars that are identified in Starting a Movement provide two structures that organize similar information. The seven characteristics of successful schools are vision, leadership, high academic standards, standards of the heart, family and community partnerships, professional development and evidence of success. The four pillars mission, vision, values and goals fit into the CSS plan in these four pillars the pillars are broad structures that contain the characteristics. Mission contains the characteristics of high academic standards and professional development. Vision are two common elements of these two structures. Values can be seen in a school’s high academic standards, standards of the heart, family and community partnerships. Finally the goals are identified in the evidence of success.

It is very important for an administrator to develop a personal vision as this provides a guiding set of principles on how to operate. The administrator's vision sets the direction to build trust and to facilitate the direction of the school. This personal vision is similar to a goal that makes the administrator accountable, and foster a personal commitment to motivate and inspire others.

Administrators need to understand that the mission forms the foundation and that the best way to move a team forward is through collective input and commitment. From my experience that can only be achieved by collecting individual input and deriving a consensus based upon institutional guidelines in this case the diocese. Specifying why the school exists established the purpose and facilitates establishing priorities.

Characteristics of Successful Schools (CSS) & the Four Pillars-Jackie

Both CSS and the Four Pillars provide a framework for school improvement. Specifically, I see correlations between Pillar 1 Mission (Why-purpose) with CSS Vision's principles & High Academic Standards, ; Pillars 2 Vision (What must we become) with CSS Vision & Professional Development; Pillar 3 Values (How we must behave) with CSS Family, School, & Community Partnership, Leadership & and Standards of the Heart; and Pillar 4 Goals (What we hope to achieve) with CSS Evidence of Success. Plus both frameworks build connects between the parts as they are not mutually exclusive but interrelated.

It is important for an admin to have a goal and vision that they truly believe in. This will would have personal connections as well as professional. On a personal level, you need to make sure that you are working in a place where your vision can be successful. If you are fighting a battle with others vision, values, or norms, it might not be conducive to your mission. As a professional, you need to make sure that you are able to follow your vision. The sense of direction that a vision is to provide has to fit within the vision of the organization, school, or other place of work.

To begin, the question posed to establish a mission is "Why do we exist?" The big take away is WE. This purpose is collective. This helps us to establish a collective purpose and helps guide us to the same end goal. What do we believe? What do we work on everyday? Why are we here? This will help to drive the collective goal and purpose of your school or organization.
