I think it was an AHA moment for me when understanding the theory behind why teachers set tasks slightly more difficult than what we can do. It challenges the students slightly above what they are comfortable with, but still giving them the support to achieve it, allowing them to feel success from a challenging task. It resonates with me in believing the potential of the child.

He emphasises on moving away from the use of rewards and punishment which I feel is interesting since most of us are used to using rewards and punishment in our classes. 

What I find interesting is his emphasis on encouraging students to take ownership on their own discipline and for teachers to establish rapport with students using various strategies such as active listening and reading emphathic understanding.

As An AED LBS, I think that we should always practice active listening. It is an important skill to have that can be applied across any situations in or out of school. Through listening, we are able to resolve issues without blaming or shaming other parties. It forces one to fully concentrate and be non-judgmental when solving a conflict. His theory allows me to think deeper on what motivates me in the choices that I make .  He explains in his theory that our choices are driven by our 5 basic needs ( survival , love & belonging, freedom, fun , and power ). Having known these 5 basic needs , it allows me to  understand people better and equips me to have different perspectives to people and their actions.

I like his I-message. For example, instead of saying "You are a bully" we can say "I am affected by how you are treating your classmate." This is less judgemental and also creates an environment that encourages students to reflect and take ownership of their own behaviours.
