Credentials are important when it comes to choosing a financial planner. You don't want anyone less than a professional giving you advice on how to allocate your assets. On credential to look for is CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) which proves that they have passed rigorous exams. In addition to they are "required to adhere to fiduciary standards" (10 Planning and Money Management). 

Adherence to fiduciary standards:
This just means that it's best to find a financial adviser who always puts his/her client's interests first. 

Expertise:
Instead of being fooled by big-name companies it's always important to look for expertise. According to page 10 of Planning and Money Management, "there is no connection between size and expertise."
 
Compatibility:

If they are too products centered or trying to sell you on a product that sounds too good to be true, you shouldn't by into it.Another thing to note is that you should never invest into something too complicated to understand or switch insurance policies when benefits are not clear.
