Information about the ivWatch was gathered from Medgadget.com and a current ongoing study from Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane Australia. The current study being conducted at Queensland Children's Hospital is utilizing the ivWatch within a 36 bed PICU with patient population of neonates to 17 year old pediatric patients (McBride et al., 2022).

As a NICU RN it is critical task to complete a minimal hourly check on PIV's within the NICU population. Fluids that contain TPN and/or lipids are very caustic to veins and if infiltration occurs it can cause severe burns, pain, and tissue damage to the neonatal skin.

The ivWatch has potential to have a great future in NICU's across the county. The fact that it can detect 0.2 mL of extracellular fluid under the skin is remarkable. Studies in the United States are needed before the product can be mainstreamed into NICU's. The current study being conducted in Queensland Children's Hospital will provide essential data to support the safe use of the product (Craig et al., 2022).
One concern for the use of the ivWatch in the neonatal population is Medgaget reported an average detection volume of 2.02 mL (Medgaget 2020). In addition, this product might not be appropriate for micro preemies or infant's under 2 kg; continued research and parameters are needed.
