A Critical Perspective and Key Questions to Stimulate Reflective Practices(Thomas)

1) Managing the discourse during Initiate-Respond-Evaluate sequence: IRE sequence as checking for understanding: Common Formative Assessment strategy but are the voices representative of the class, and is individual understanding assessed? Then why IRE? What is the purpose of the questions and the use of the students’ responses?

2) Augmented Reality as engagement tool: Engagement+, Learning-? What is the link between the AR element to the scientific concepts to be learnt? How does the photo-taking task link to the actual learning outcome (8 minutes+ for Chick and Chicken to achieve a superficial understanding or observation)?

3) AR Object View may be more meaningful to study the characteristics of the animals. Students to document their observations individually or in pairs rather than through IRE sequence.

4) Social aspect of learning is powerful for engagement, but for learning, need to channel the discourse towards the learning points rather than for non-learning related task completion. Significant majority of student discourse during the activity time is task-but-not-learning oriented [e.g. You hold this, press this button], but there's no negotiation of ideas that harnesses the power of the social aspect of learning.

5) Quizziz for Lesson Recap and Reteach, Clarify misconceptions. Consider using a question slide for each pair to document the learning during the activity for quick checking of understanding and individualized feedback

6) Use of Video Reflection task: Potential delay in assessment and feedback because of the nature of the reflection? Key is to minimize delay between response and feedback to ensure deeper and permanent learning. Video reflections are powerful to represent deeper understanding, but may not be apt for a short checking for understanding task. Consider creating a video as an end-of-learning-unit task for students to make sense of their entire learning.

Truly appreciate them.

If I were to conduct the lesson again, one change I would make will be to instruct the students to take pictures of the similarities and differences between the young and adult instead.

Also, I would include more opportunities to type their responses to my questions instead of getting feedback. That would make the learning of all students visible. ☺️
