Frank was assigned 2 days of work a week in a field of a nearby estate, so he paid someone to do his own labor. Frank Blaichman escaped being imprisoned in a death camp by running to the forest In the forest he stumbled upon an encampment of 100+ Jews sheltered in small bunkers. He organized a defense unit. One morning, German soldiers attacked the encampment using information given from Polish spies. Only 22 remained, Frank being one of the lucky. They kept moving when they found and ended up joining forces with refugees from Markuszow. The unit grew again when Frank met Samuel “Mietek” Gruber, who had 28 other men from a prison in Lublin. They began being known as the Markuszow group and hunted spies and collaborators, disrupted Nazi communications, and ambushed German patrols. By September 1943, the unit began working with Armia Ludowa, a communist-led Polish Partisan group. Armia Ludowa gave his unit food, and advanced weaponry.
Dates: 1943, Plan was to keep moving and hopefully keep expanding. They kept moving and came across and started working with Armia Ludowa, which upgraded their equipment and rejuvenated their people.
Important Facts: To trade in Lubartow and Lublin, he had to pass as a poll. He learned polish from his grandma’s shop, who were polish customers, instead of school and reading. Frank obtained firearms by passing as a polish policeman by using an overcoat he had found. He used these for the defense unit. Mietek Gruber’s group knew how to fight and how to use explosives. At age 21, Frank was the youngest Platoon commander in the unit and was chosen to escort the future prime minister of Poland to a secret meeting with the Soviets.
