John D. Rockefeller changed the world forever. He revolutionized the oil industry. This has greatly impacted modern day life, considering a majority of Americans drive vehicles running on oil. Rockefeller was taught from early on in life to rely on contracts in business. Rockefeller controlled the oil industry in many ways including; constructing the oil pipelines which helped the railways run, successfully refined oil at cheap prices, and manufactured his own refining equipment. John's extremely competitive nature led to his fighting to be the richest man alive.

The working conditions of the workers employed by Rockefeller were awful. Rockefeller employed children as young as 8 years old. This caused a deterioration of any progress being made on the Education Reform. The workers were forced to work 10 hour days without breaks. This caused permanent damage to the worker's bodies. Women were often fired after becoming pregnant, this added problems and stress in the home as times were already rough. Medical coverage also didn't exist for workers, even if they were hurt on the job.

The living conditions in the 1870s were horrific. Poor immigrants and low pay led to many families sharing a single apartment. This caused a spread in bacteria due to the lack of plumbing and the obscene overcrowding. Many of the workers during this time left their homeland to escape poverty, unfortunately they moved to a large city in America. The infrastructure during this time wasn't up to par, the cities weren't prepared to take in thousands of people. This led to the lack of a garbage service, leaving waste on the streets. This was an unhealthy environment for these children to be living in.

One major invention of the time period was the telephone. This invention has greatly impacted our society today. The telephone revolutionized communication, connecting cities together. It also helped urbanization as families were now able to travel and move whilst still remaining connected. This allowed people to share information much faster than alternative methods.

I feel as if the working conditions hindered the progress overall. The workers were treated very poorly, being worked to the point of exhaustion. This negatively impacted America's outlook on industrialization of the time.
The awful living conditions caused the spreading of harsh bacteria, which eventually led to sickness. Some families were forced to share an apartment with multiple other families. This didn't help the process of America immediately , eventually building codes were passed due to tragic accidents which could've been avoided with better laws.
The telephone positively impacted the worker's lives by helping them communicate with other, offering support to family of any distance. This greatly helped America during a time in which the working class was in need.
Rockefeller affected America positively and negatively. He revolutionized the oil industry on the back's of the working class. Eventually this would benefit everyone. Unfortunately at the time people were suffering.
