Mrs. Stevenson collaborated with colleagues about combining a decomposition lesson and a ten-frame lesson. Students would use a ten-frame as a visual aid and critical thinking to figure out combinations of decomposed sets of 5 or 10.

Marzano states that the effects of helping students make nonlinguistic representations of their learning are strong on achievement. Marzano stated that research indicates that the following activities enhance student learning: creating graphic representations, making physical models, generating mental pictures, drawing pictures, and engaging in kinesthetic activity.

Students with disabilities benefit from the use of visual representations and visual strategies to aid their learning. Examples include: using pictures for schedules, using pictures for counting, adding, and subtracting, using pictures for classroom rules, using graphic organizers for reading comprehension and using graphic organizers for writing expectations.
