The main difference I can see would be the more specialized nature of embedded writing tutoring compared to what I'm used to in the academic year. I don't have any current concerns other than possibly adjusting this difference, but I believe it will ultimately lead to stronger connections

One difference I anticipate during NewStart tutoring that I don’t see in the academic year is being able to sit in on classes and get more context for the topics they learn in class. This would help me better understand the assignments they come to me with that I don’t always get during the academic year. There is also a closer bond with the students in NewStart, as you see them more often. As of now, I don‘t have any major concerns, I just don’t know what to expect as it’s my first summer.

I think a key difference is that we have a lot more opportunities to build trust with the students and get to know and support them better. Something I might struggle with is being patient when students ask questions I’d normally expect people to know the answers to like “What’s D2L”. I plan to overcome this by reminding myself that they’re new and connect their struggles to my own when I was a new student.

Two of the main differences will be the embedded tutoring and the specific new start drop in tutoring. Since I have experience working in the math 196b classrooms and in the math 100 tutoring sessions, I feel prepared to step into the space as an embedded tutor. Working with the new start students exclusively will be exciting and different compared to the frequency I would normally see people in the drop in room. I think it may be challenging for me to see so many of the same people every day as I am technically an introvert. However, with the support of staff and my peers, I believe this challenge will not be a hinderance and will ultimately be beneficial to social growth.

I feel like the fast paced nature of NEWSTART would be different because I am used to teaching MATH100 / 112 over a period of 14-16 weeks and not on a short time (~6 weeks). How I can overcome this is by planning to the detail and being proactive

One of the differences between New Start and the academic year is that during New Start, tutors have the opportunity to be a part of the actual class. I don’t have any concerns with this change, as I have been a part of a tutoring team that operates both inside and outside the classroom. I think being integrated in the class will help build stronger tutor-student connections!

During my experiences last year, due to the fact New Start deals with a smaller cohort of students, they tend to be more apt in opening up about their lives, so I feel setting boundaries is more important. I also feel that being patient is important too, especially since these students just graduated from high school, so their behaviors might be more inline with that environment.
