Lesson 5 - A person’s sexuality is defined by many parts including their gender identity and the attraction they feel for others.

If someone has a sexual experience with someone of the same gender, does that mean they are gay/lesbian/bisexual? Who decides? Can someone’s sexual preferences change over their lifetime?

Someone's sexual experiences do not directly define their sexual orientation. this is a complex topic of attraction, desires, and identity over time. Everyone has different interpretations of sexual experiences and self-identification plays a larger role. Ultimately they decide what they are identified as. Yes, certainly a person's sexual orientation can change as their preferences can change. Sexual orientation is never fixed and it is always fluid, it can be affected by many different factors like personal growth, different experiences, deeper understanding of themselves, etc. Many individuals find them selfs having different sexual orientations later in life but many people maintain the same sexual orientation.

Are people in same-gender relationships in Australia supported? What laws support or don’t support them? Can people in same-gender relationships get married? How was this decided? Was this fair?

Australia usually shows inclusivity for same-gender relationships, the legalisation of same-gender marriage in 2017.

Research shows that young people are more homophobic in high school (aged 14–17) and less homophobic when they leave (aged 18–24). Why do you think this is?

The transition from high school to adulthood leads to a higher percentage of acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community due to some factors like more exposure to diverse mindsets and perspectives

You overhear a peer at school yell, “...that’s so gay!” What do you do?

I feel very concerned for the person who is using that type of language as this shouldn't be a topic that is being joked around with. As this is a really sensitive topic for some people, which might offend them and make them feel uncomfortable.
