My symbols name is Frank the Flamingo. He is a medium sized stress ball shaped like a flamingo. He is pastel pink with cute googly eyes and he has a black beak, he has no legs or hands. He sits on a purple folding chair. I got him this year at the store my mom works at called Francesscas. You can also buy him on ebay but I am not sure if they have him in stock anymore. I gifted my sister one and I named her Francine. He is meaningful to me because he is a friend that can keep me company and ease my anxiety. People in your life will come and go but objects that you own can stay with you forever. High school was pretty rough for me, I moved to a small town and was already struggling at a new school and then covid happened. It was four years of hell, I tried to cope and move along and I was fine for a while to January of this year. I had a really bad breakdown that lasted for months. I was so anxious I was throwing up every morning, I had pretty bad insomnia. It felt like my brain was dying. I found out that I had ocd and anxiety disorder. Its weird because the world does not stop when you're at a low point. You wake up just day after day after day, it does not stop. After a couple of months I got a grasp on my life and started trying to recover and that when I found Frank and from that point on we were inseparable. He made me happy and he was a distraction and when I felt nervous i squished him. If you told me a couple years ago I would be carrying around a small flamingo stress toy around I probably wouldn't believe you. I would have found a 17 year old walking around with a toy embarrassing. But I didn't not care at all. I used him in class, at the store even when I was driving he would be between my hand and the wheel. SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH. After I moved away my mental health has improved and I haven't used him in a while but he sits on my desk and reminds me that I always have him as a friend. He symbolizes my courage and resilience.

I picked the Learning Commons because they had a Math tutor who has had experience with Economics 101. I went to the meeting and wanted to learn from my mistakes on the midterm. I messed up on one problem and I needed help with the equations. I wanted to try to go over the problems so I could get a better grade on the next test. The experience was okay. There was nobody at the reception desk so I had no idea what my tutor looked like or where they would be. I met with Rita. She wasn't an expert but she tried to explain it to me. I still am not confident I have mastered the problem. The session helped me understand my economic identity because it sometimes you struggle and asking for help is okay. Not everyone is always 100 percent good at everything. As a college student i understand that I am not alone and my school is trying to help me.

It is always important to remember history. When we learn from the past, we can work together to make the world a better place for the future. The civil war in the United States is an important event we can look back on and learn from the past. When a group of people, or country, is divided we need to explore why. Is one side being treated unfairly? Why is everyone so angry? Can we come to agreement? Unity is important because being one strong group of people is better than having 2 strong groups of people. When we put aside our differences at the end of the day we bleed the same color. We all go through struggles even if they arent the same. We live and we die, so why should we spend the precious time we have on Earth pulling each other down. The civil war is important today because it reminds us that even if we dont share the same beliefs we must come together and continue to do what is right.

Reflect on how your understanding of our course theme of “keeping track” has evolved throughout the term.

When I first was introduced to the theme “keeping track”, I thought it was more about turning assignments in on time and staying focus. And while it is those things it is many more. Keeping track can sprout into other themes such as growth, perspective, unity symbolism and creativity. Keeping track is about being not only being responsible for us but being responsible for others. Keeping track means doing what is right for yourself and others.

What are some insights concerning Roosevelt University’s community (fac ulty, advisors, support services, etc.) resources that are in place in order for you to succeed as an individual and student in this college environment?

I think in general for being a pretty small school roosevelt has a good set of faculty and staff. It however is lacking is tutoring resources. It was very hard trying to find a tutor for me and she wasn’t even specilized in what I needed. I left feeling the same not as confident. Also the director of advising here (LINDA DAVIS) is so rude. Her attitude and behavior is unacceptable and she is throughout with her work because she made a mistake and tried to play it off like it wasn't her fault and I had to take days trying to contact her to correct her mistake. I wish I felt like some of the staff cared about the students more. I like all of my teachers except one. They are friendly and supportive.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned in your HON 101 experience this semester?

I think the most valuable lesson I learned is to think outside of the box. I feel like we are taught all our lives that our opinions are right and we should only stick to what we want. With this class the professor taught me that my opinions are valid but we should also try to think outside of the box. I really enjoyed our class discussions where I heard everyone elses opinions.

Hello Future First Years Honor 101 student. My name is Olivier and I just complete this class. I wanted to put together some advice and pointers that would make your time here smoother and would help you get through the semester. First off remember that your composition notebook is your best friend. Make sure to write all your notes and anything important that you learn. Remember to ask questions and for any help you need. Mr McMahon is the best at answering questions. Also make sure to make a friend in class to have to talk to about the work and have a buddy for group work. One thing that really helped me was getting assignments done as soon as they were assigned. It helped me not procrastinate as much and took a load off my shoulders. When I got assignments done early I didn't have to worry about them later on and could take time for myself to enjoy. I wish someone told me to interact more with my classmates and make connections before I stated this course. I feel like I should have tried to go out of my comfort zone more and try to be more friendlier with my classmates. I feel like the biggest challenge I faced this semester was my schedule. I have never been good at having an organized stable schedule. I tried to fix it and I have made slow progress but I haven't mastered it one hundred percent. Hopefully next semester when I come back I can work on that since I have had a taste of college life already. It is important to keep track in my personal life and academic life to stay focused on my goals. Hopefully you can thrive in your classes and meet some friends along the way. Just remember to always make sure you put yourself first and doing everything to make you happy! 🙂
