1.OA.C6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. 

Two students both flip over their top card at the same time. Both students add/subtract the two numbers and state the answer aloud.  The first one to answer keeps both cards.  Game continues until one student has all of the cards.

We read the poem as a class during shared reading. The following day, the class received their own copy of the poem and had to go through and highlight snap words that they had learned this year.

As a small group, we used the pocket chart in the above picture and decided what chunk we were sorting our words by this week. First, we made the headers at the top.  Then each student received one of the words that needed to be sorted for the week.  They shared the word with their classmates, put the word in the correct column, and explained why the word went in that column.  This had them individually interact with the chart to learn the pattern for the week.

This Writer's Workshop lesson was at the end of the unit on writing narratives. Each student received a self-evaluation checklist to assess their own writing individually.  I could make this lesson into a small group/individual lesson by  pulling strategy groups.  I could have a group on ending marks/capital letters, a group that needs to add to their pictures, a group that needs to use more details, and a group that needs to have one story throughout multiple pages.

For our morning meeting activity, I incorporated what we learned at the Arts Integration Conference before the school year began.  During the PD, they taught us one way to integrate art is to add movement with shapes and action words.  I used this learning to have students move around the classroom while paying special attention to the action words used.

I began a morning meeting routine every day in my classroom.  This is my weekly plan of morning meeting activities prior to the morning message.  It created a community because they were able to share and learn about their classmates and see what they had in common with each other.
